SPORT Cross Country

CROSS COUNTRY This event was held in lovely autumn conditions on Monday 6 May. It was organised in a new format: school closed early and races began in staggered starts from 3pm to allow for an earlier finish. This allowed boys to compete in warmer conditions (and supervising staff to stand in warmer conditions for less time). It seemed a positive move and may be continued in future years.

It was another great day’s racing by the top part of the field over all the grades. There was also a good team of staff competing. The success of the event was primarily due to the efficiency of the staff marshalling at the beginning and in the clean- up, combined with the enthusiastic assistance of the gap students. Paul Rodley continues to play a key role in the event, with his barcode system producing the results electronically, enabling the winners of the House

HARRIERS The season was a positive one for the two boys who joined the College team for winter interclub season. Both achieved personal bests. There were also other students who competed for College in regional and national secondary school competitions. We had some good results in those events, including what I believe to be College’s first national secondary school junior cross country champion. There was a mixture of muddy and dry courses, which seems to be the new normal in our sport because of the change in weather patterns. This year, because of injury to our senior runners and because there were only two Year 9 athletes, a captain was not appointed. Interclub – highlights of the season This year College harrier athletes again joined the Papanui Toc H Athletic Club to compete. This gave the boys the opportunity to participate in team events which, due to small numbers, they would not have been able to do had they run for College. They have raced in the: Jane Patterson Cross Country Races Canterbury Cross Country Championships Canterbury Road Racing Championships South Island Cross Country Championships Andrew Reese Memorial Relay
