NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS The National Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships,

CANTERBURY SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ CROSS COUNTRY This event was held on Tuesday 28 May at the old Ascot Golf Course adjacent to Taiora QEII Recreation and Sport Centre. The day was cool and the course was wet and muddy in places. Despite the demanding course we had excellent results again from the boys who raced. Thank you, Rob Clarke, for taking the boys to this event, as I was away on the day.

incorporating the National Interprovincial 5x2km Relay

Championships on Sunday, took place in Timaru on the weekend of 15–16 June. A small team went to this event, with a couple pulling out at the last minute due to illness. Although the ground was soft underfoot, with cool conditions both days, the venue was one of the best I have been to. There were over 700 competitors altogether, and some excellent runs by most of the boys over the two days. Christopher Ireland had to pull out due to injury during the 6km event, but he recovered overnight and ran an excellent lap in his relay team on Sunday. Sam Idiens was the pick of the College boys, running a brilliant race to claim the national title in the Junior Boys 4km race. I am not sure if a College athlete has ever won a national title in this event, Sam’s success may be the first time this has happened.
