ATHLETICS NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS Sam Idiens competed in the National Cross Country Championships in Wellington on Sunday 4 August. Although he could have run 4km in the U16 grade, he opted instead to run 6km in the U18 grade, aiming for selection in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ World Championship Cross Country team. Sam was the youngest runner by far in this grade and his result – 9th overall – was excellent. Sam placed 6th among those who were up for possible selection for the world championships (for a six man team). In the team competition (four runners to count), the Canterbury team placed 1st in the U18 competition, therefore Sam won a gold team medal. For full results go to the Athletics New Zealand website.

INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATION

As a result of his performance at this event, Sam was selected as a reserve for the New Zealand Secondary Schools team to go to the 2020 World Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships. We wish Sam good luck and hope he gets to compete on the world stage. CONCLUSION This has again been a very positive season for College harriers. We do need to build our numbers, however, so if you love running, come and give it a try. Thank you to all the athletes and their parents who have made it such an enjoyable and successful season.
