2ND XI FOOTBALL Coach: Kevin Harris

we played our best football of the season. With some quality defending from Hayden Ott and Tommy Whittaker preventing goal scoring opportunities, we were able to move up the pitch and attack with confidence. Although they were still a skill class above us, we put up a good fight, gave them a shock, and again proved we could compete with such teams. Unfortunately, even after playing well, our season ended with us at the bottom of the division. We were then placed in the play-off for the plate. This was where the hard work we had put in began to show in our results. The boys displayed a lot of spirit and pride and, even in these last few matches, saw great improvement. Our first match for the plate was against a weaker Waimak United side. After a very strong and dominant performance we managed to win the match 3–0. Some highlights included Josh Wynne’s impressive skill up front to score two goals and Max Surveyor’s nimble footwork in the midfield to outplay the opponents. Some top performances from Roberto O’Shannessey and Homare Nakajima helped us control the game. The last game of the season was a special one, especially for the Year 13 students as it was their last game in College colours. The game against FC Twenty11, who we had already played a few times in the regular season, started slow. However, the team was determined to win the plate. Resounding defensive play from Tom Tothill and John-Paul Lay allowed us to keep possession and, as a result, let us play out from the back. Goals to Jordy Annand and Jack Lindo took College to 2–0 at half-time. Jack added two more goals in the second half in typical Lindo fashion to complete yet another hat-trick and take his season tally to 23 goals and 45 in the last two seasons. The final score was a 4–1 win to College – the best possible end for the Year 13 students in their final game for College football.

Learning and adapting were key. Starting in Division 2 of the 19th Grade, the boys played the traditional game and were by far the strongest team in the division, playing through the grading round undefeated and with a huge goal difference. But the learning was about to begin. Promotion to Division 1 was always going to be a big ask – playing against university teams and boys that were considerably older and stronger than the core of the team. The boys were keen and knew it was to be a challenge. After our first game in Division 1 it was apparent we needed to step up. The tables were reversed and we were on the wrong end of the score. Although going up against a strong university development side for this first game, we proved we could still score goals and that gave us confidence. While it was a tough introduction to a change in divisions, it gave us a great idea of what we would be up against for the remainder of the season. The rest of the season was about learning to play smart, as physically we could not match the other teams. As we progressed, the improvement could be noticed. Although we did not end up with the result we wanted in most of our games, we left the pitch pleased with our performance as a team. A prime example of this was our game against the university premier team, who were top of the table. Despite some players being absent,

Team: Harrison Lund (captain), Ben Abbot, Isaac Aitken, Oscar Aynsley, Charlie Chubb, Jake Cutler, Rory Doull, Henry Eglinton, Ben Evans, Monty Hamilton, Gray Heath, Justin Hodges, Josh Jolly, Fergus Laing, Austin Lamberg, Charlie Owens, Oliver Stewart The 2019 Ravens squad endured both the highs and lows of an action- packed season to emerge as both pool contenders and better all-round footballers. The team bonded well, despite injuries to key players, and began exhibiting great skills and knowledge of the game toward the end of the season, capped off by great performances, including a 2–2 draw against a formidable top of the table FC Twenty11 team. The season began with a strong 2–0 victory over Cashmere. But this result could not be replicated throughout the qualifying rounds, with the team losing consecutive nail-biting matches that could have gone either way. Fortunately, these results were sufficient to secure a place in the Division 3, 17th Grade competition. Qualifying also allowed the team to develop what would become an essential part of their offence – wing play. Spearheaded by top goal scorer Charlie Owens, the wing attack of Austin Lamberg, Justin Hodges and Jake Cutler combined a unique skill set of speed and ball control to create some great offensive moments. Spurred on by captain Harrison Lund, and under the wise eye of coach Billy Hong, the team rallied to overcome the slow start that was qualifying with a strong 6–3
