3RD XI FOOTBALL Manager: Kate Morris Coaches: Nathan Townsend, Neil de Joux, Tom Raymond Team: Aperahama Anaru-Astwood, Sam Barnett, Peter Bodie-Healy, Scott Cranstone, Sam Falvey, Jim Gibbs, Cole Gurnsey, Jenner Johnson, Daniel Kutovoy, Andrew Kwak, Ryan Liu, William Oakley, Dexter Parris, Lenny Parris, Owen Short The 2019 season began with a hiss and a roar, with the boys displaying monumental potential throughout their first few games. Our first match was a strong win, and it soon became apparent the players were coming to terms with each other, beginning to form together and work well as a team. With goals being scored left, right and centre, defenders, midfielders and attackers quickly created a tight and coherent bond that would last for the entire season. This bond continued to develop even in games we lost. In our fourth match, despite losing 4–1 to Christchurch Boys’ High School, the 3rd XI continued to come together. Fullbacks Jenner Johnson, Jim Gibbs and Peter Bodie-Healy brought excellent energy in defence, and luckily top of the table CBHS were fairly inaccurate with their shooting. Attacker Owen Short kept the team’s heads held high after scoring a clinical finish. However, after early season fitness kicked in, College came to a slump. Fitness was one of the main factors in the team’s bad luck at the beginning of the season, but with the benefit of coaching from technical Nathan Townsend, clinical and enjoyable Neil de Joux and Old Boy Tom Raymond, after a while fitness was no longer an issue. This led to many long-lasting positives throughout the 2019 season. In a home game against Waimak United 17 White, the 3rd XI’s potential continued to shine. College began the match very well, with smart and systematic plays, but without key players the boys were at a disadvantage. The intense and repetitive training had served

win over Cashmere Technical to begin divisional play. However, missed opportunities at both ends of the field saw the team lose highly competitive matches throughout this section of the season. The midfield provided the team with a steady platform through these ups and downs, aided by the steady and calculated play of Harrison and Charlie Chubb, and the infectious energy of Josh Jolly. This midfield group combined well with striker Ben Abbot, who managed to score nine goals over the course of the season through a combination of strong shooting and finesse finishing. Despite some strong all-round performances in the last few rounds of divisional play, including a three game unbeaten streak capped off by a resounding 6–1 win, the team placed 4th in the league. The remainder of the season was composed of a three game pool play-off, with the Ravens placed in Pool B. The boys continued their run of late season form with a four goal outing against Cashmere Technical. Defence was especially strong in this game, with the tight defensive unit of Isaac Aitken, Ben Evans, Monty Hamilton, Fergus Laing and Henry Eglinton managing to hold the opposition scoreless. Goalkeeper Oscar Aynsley also proved his worth over the course of the season, as his numerous feats of goal saving athleticism became a huge factor in the team’s success. The season proved a great experience for all those involved with the Ravens squad. The boys formed some great friendships and created many memories, as well as experiencing a roller coaster ride of football’s highs and lows. None of it would have been possible, however, if not for the countless hours of dedication and hard work poured into the team by coach Billy Hong and manager Jennifer Wong.

its purpose, however, and enabled the team to take a huge win. Corner training also came into play, with three of the goals a result of corner kicks from Sam Barnett. Goals continued to rain from fantastic play from the very technical Ryan Liu and the unstoppable steam train that is Lenny Parris. While the 3rd XI experienced set- backs throughout the season, it soon became apparent not only how effectively the boys worked together as a unit, but also how kind and understanding all the boys were. This made the 2019 football season very pleasurable and created enjoyable memories for everybody. What this team achieved would not have been possible without the unconditional help behind the scenes from manager Kate Morris, who gave her all to ensure the team’s success on and off the pitch.
