at the season. Competing at a high level for the majority of the season and ultimately finding themselves in 2nd place, eight whole points clear of 3rd placed Nomads, was a just reward for what was positive and promising collective quality over the course of the 2019 season. Each and every player showed significant development, and this 15A group will have College very optimistic as it progresses into 1st XI football in the coming years.

was always dependable, putting his all into protecting our end of the field without fail. The highlight for him in Term 2, however, was a game against St Bede’s College when positions were rearranged and Joe moved up to a striker position to net two very celebrated goals himself. With such a convincing start, the boys earned promotion to Division 2, a league they had never been in before. They started well in the new division, adapting well with some hard fought games against tough opposition. Gray Heath joined and became a steady team player. As the season wore on, however, many injuries and the new league resulted in a drop in form, with many games played with only 11 players. June was a dark month, without a single win, but the team got its hopes up again after beating Christchurch Boys’ High School 7–2, in a peak game that included another hat-trick of goals to Oliver. Goals also went to Remy, Adam Chamberlain, and visiting player Spencer Smith. Unfortunately the 15Bs slid right back down into several low-scoring matches towards the end of the season. On game day, nobody could fault the attitude of the boys, with huge distances being run week in and week out, and some leaders emerging in the team. There were several games, such as the last one against the St Bede’s 15As, that felt much more evenly matched than the low scores suggested. Our boys played well and fought hard, they just weren’t always able to finish their chances. Special mentions go to Oliver Butler, Remy Fitzgerald, Finlay Broomhall, Justin Barclay and Joe Pfahlert for always putting in 100 per cent and attempting to enable others around them to do the same. It has been a roller coaster of a rebuild year for the team, with promotion, big wins, narrow defeats and injuries all contributing to the emotions of all involved with the squad. Don’t be surprised if you see some of these boys in College’s top teams in a few years, especially if they continue to progress as they have this year.

Players made great progress both individually and as a team. The team was able to secure a place in Division 1 after early successes. While nervous about this step up they coped admirably. They were then placed third in this grade and showed the resilience to keep their heads up and struggle on when faced with tough opposition. The team made a confident start, winning some games by a healthy margin. The wide mix of goal scorers in AJ Madondo, Lachie Short, Robbie Ward, Will Bretherton, Jono Barnes, Hamish Falls-Anderson and Matthew Brett meant that with the season well under way, the team were feeling pretty confident. Robbie and Matthew scored the most goals of the season and showed a real flare for ball control alongside speed. Lachie and Will played with passion each game and showed promising leadership skills. The strikers, including Toby Jackson, were making confident runs and there was some gritty work from the midfield. When the going got tough, goalkeeper Alex Lloyd was a force to be reckoned with in every game. He coped superbly under pressure and saved numerous goals in some games. The going became tougher as we moved into Division 1. Unfortunately, the end of season saw a number of losses for the team. The most memorable being two games out
