won 4, drew 1 and lost many. At the end of the season the 2nd XI were in the play-off for 7th–8th against St Bede’s College, a team they had beaten in previous encounters. It was a game of back and forth play and moments of great hockey, in particular from the College boys. In the end the team managed a 2–1 win, which could have been a lot more if the chances created in the final quarter of the game had come to fruition. The improved performance of all team members was the most pleasing aspect of play as the season progressed. They always gave it their all, even in games where they were up against some tough opposition and under loads of pressure defensively. The team would create a large number of chances to score in each game, and had they successfully finished a few more the results would have had College on the winning side of the scoreboard.

also to Gus Wakeling who coached the boys so well, imparting his knowledge and skills all season to help the boys improve.

into the goal and did an outstanding job, showing a natural talent for the position. The Worner Award for Spirit and Enthusiasm went to Harry Trolove, who worked very hard as a midfielder. He never gave up and was always upbeat and positive despite usually being under attack. He was a key member of the team, linking defenders and attackers. The Most Improved Player went to Cole Smith, whose skills continued to develop throughout the season. Although it was just as tough for him, coach Fergal Dods was very positive. His true professionalism shone through and he was always a very positive role model for the boys. Every week the team tried a different strategy until it found one that worked well – to have four backs instead of two. This meant, in their last few games, the goal difference went down to a more acceptable average of four goals per match.

The inexperienced team started in the Division 2 grade following on from the 2018 team’s success, competing against other 1st and 2nd XI teams. They conceded on average 10 goals per match, and opportunities to score were few and far between. Despite large losses every week, however, the boys faced the fact that every game was going to be tough and never gave up. They may not have won anything, but the team demonstrated perseverance and teamwork. Thankfully, later in the season they were moved down a grade, which meant they achieved one win against Christ’s College Black, the only proper win of the season. The team did have a win against Ashburton earlier in the season, but it was a game played after College had defaulted because of a lack of 3rd XI players. Three 1st XI players volunteered to help out, the game went ahead, and it ended up counting as a win for the 3rd. Highlights of the season would have to be the number of goals Louie Kinder-Rycroft managed to stop – he would have saved around 25 per match and, for this reason, was awarded Most Valuable Player. On the occasions that Louie was unavailable, Harry Penter stepped
