Matthew Munro, Jonathan Murphy, William Olsson, Alex Stead, Jack Sutherland The Colts XI on paper were one of the strongest in several years, but unfortunately didn’t quite live up to their potential. In many games they played some fantastic hockey for periods of the match, but not long enough to create match winning situations. Highlights were wins over Ashburton College 2nd XI and St Andrew’s College 3rd XI, and a couple of remarkable draws with StAC Colts XI and Christchurch Boys’ High School Headmaster’s XI. Will Morris, James Griffin and Johnny Bullen were the heartbeat of the side in midfield, with Alex Stead and Isaac Heap initially, then Tom Foster, Sam Kelly and James Griffin scoring the goals. Matt Munro, Will Law, Hugh Duston, Jonathan Murphy and Oscar Chaffey regularly demonstrated the future is bright in defence, with Will Olsson particularly good in goal. I was also impressed with the versatility of Jack Sutherland, Freddy Backhouse and Will Fraser who played in pretty much every position, as did Tim Gould and Sam

Kelly, who both finished the season playing for the 2nd XI. In the final reckoning, winning five and losing six of the regular season matches represents a decent return, and a final placing of 5th in the grade was a solid achievement. As usual, the Tanner Cup competition finished the season – and the team, bolstered by Zach Adams and Alex McEwan, headed to Hamilton with confidence. First up, as with the previous two years, were defending champions Palmerston North Boys’ High School. The squad played well, creating five more penalty corners than PNBHS, but could not convert until the final minute, whilst the opposition seemed to score every time they entered our D. In the end, the 1–5 loss was disappointing but not tournament ending, as we went on to beat Lindisfarne College 3–0 to qualify for the top eight. College played a very strong Westlake Boys’ High School team in the quarter-finals and were soundly beaten by the eventual champions 0–7, before going on to lose their

final matches against StAC and King’s College, Auckland, as fatigue set in. In the end, College finished in 8th position – one better than last year. Many thanks to Matt Thatcher for his support in Hamilton and to the mightily impressive Llewey Heale and Will Duston for their excellent coaching and motivational work. The boys responded well to their outlook on the game and this will stand them in good stead for the future. A final thanks to all the parents who supported the Colts throughout the season, no matter the weather!
