and Conner Jenkins – played a Christchurch Combined team. It was a level start, with both teams defending well, until Conner moved to the back and took control. After the second chukka, College stepped into overdrive and the goals kept coming. Henry scored twice, George once, Conner twice and Edward once. Final score 6–4, with George named MVP of the match. Sunday 24 March 2019 With four teams playing across four grades, College definitely finished this tournament on a high, which was fantastic to see. The morning started with the D and E grades. The E grade team – Beau Armstrong, Freddy Backhouse, Charlie Burdon and Henry Lassen – played very well together considering it was their first polo tournament. Their first match was against Christchurch Combined, which they lost 0–1. Up next they had a 1–0 win against St Margaret’s College. The boys were playing much better and had clearly started thinking about tactics. In their final match – the play-off for 1st and 2nd in the grade – they lost 0–1 to Christchurch Girls’ High School. Jonti Bellaney, George Cochrane, Max Cookeson and Hayden Goodwin played in the D grade. This was a superstar young team who right from the start played very well together. They won their first match against Rangiora B 1–0. They then went on to beat Medbury Red, which put them into the final against CGHS. It was a close match with both teams scoring, which meant it went into a rundown – and College won. Victory was sweet, especially as Hayden was awarded MVP of the grade.

The B grade team – Henry Bowmar, Harry Burt, Winston Hutchinson and Jayden Reiter – faced some tough competition. Despite a messy start in their first match against Christchurch Combined, Winston cleaned up and scored twice to take the team to a 2–0 win. Next, they played St Andrew’s College A and lost 1–2 in a very close game, before winning their match against CGHS 2–0. In their final match against St Margaret’s, College played well as a team, showing what they were capable of and winning 3–0. The team finished 2nd in the grade, and Winston was awarded joint MVP of the grade along with a player from StAC. In the A grade, the College team of Henry Batchelor, Edward Davidson, George Hutchinson and Conner Jenkins took on the best of the South Island in a Vendetta team. Conner came out on defence and the first chukka was dominated by College, with both Conner and Henry scoring. The second chukka was fast and College continued their push on attack. Two more goals for Conner and a spot penalty for Henry saw College take a 5–2 lead. In the third chukka Vendetta finally got some points on the board, closely followed by two further goals from Conner. You could see the boys getting tired in the last chukka and Vendetta again managed to score. The final score was 7–2 to College. MVP of the match went to George Hutchinson who controlled the game from the middle and set up numerous plays that led to scoring opportunities. Sunday 24 November 2019 All boys saw a huge improvement in their skills throughout the season, and the introduction of bike polo on Monday afternoon has been a

SOUTH ISLAND SUPA TOURNAMENTS Sunday 3 March 2019 After being postponed due to rain, the first tournament of the season went ahead in perfect conditions on Sunday 3 March. As it was the first tournament, only boys that had previously played could play. College entered teams in the A, B and C grades. The C grade team – Jonti Bellaney, Harry Burt, George Cochrane and Hayden Goodwin – was up first, playing in the morning. This was a new team combination and the boys struggled to get possession of the ball in their first match against Rangiora. They lost 0–3. Their next game was against a very strong Medbury team and, despite their best efforts, the boys again went down 0–3. Their final match was also against Rangiora. Hayden scored for College, taking the team to a 1–0 win. The B grade team – Henry Bowmar, Winston Hutchinson, Angus Turnham and Takato Watanabe – started after lunch. Their first match was a 0–2 loss to St Andrew’s College, before a 1–0 win against Christchurch Girls’ High School. Takato scored the winning goal. The team then went on to play Blue Springs and won 1–0, with Winston scoring. The final match was against St Margaret’s College. The boys were on top of their game and won 3–2.
