Batchelor (stroke), Sam Willems, Johnny Lee, Edward Bayliss, George Matheson, Lachie Henderson, Max Heywood, Hugo Nelson and Nic Turnbull (coxswain) slowly started to reel in each of the other crews and, by the last 500m, were only a length behind Hamilton. Lifting their rating from 34 to 38 strokes per minute saw College fly up right beside HBHS, but unfortunately they weren’t able to pass and finished 0.4 seconds behind. The final event of the day was the U18 Four. College had two crews in this event and, as both had raced well all week, confidence was high. Unfortunately, this race proved to be their worst performance of the season. After a slow start, neither College crew had found a rhythm and by the 1000m mark were trailing both CBHS and Westlake Boys’ High School. Despite their best efforts, the boys were unable to close this gap. At the finish, College’s 1st Four of Alex Todhunter (stroke), Jamie Batchelor, Jack Elvy, Will Chaffey and Max Marsh (coxswain) managed to hold on for 3rd place. The first event for College on the second day of finals was the U18 Novice Four. This was an extremely close race. As the crews went through the 1000m mark, two seconds separated 1st from 8th place. In a truly mad dash to the finish, the College crew – Max Heywood (stroke), Edward Bayliss, George Matheson, Lachie Henderson and Henry Mossman (coxswain) – held their composure while others cracked under the pressure, and finished a well-deserved 3rd. The U16 Eight was next. Archie Batchelor, Gus Orr, Liam Alexander, Thomas McEwan, Johnny Lee, Jono Henderson, Louie Bethell, Angus Wynn-Williams and Hamish McCulloch (coxswain) had had a stellar season and were one of the favourites to win gold. After the first 500m, College had a third of a length lead. At the halfway point they had extended this lead out to half and were still moving away from the field. Pushing ahead again, they extended their lead even further and, with

600m left, they established a full length’s lead over their nearest rival, holding it all the way to the finish. The final race of the regatta was the U18 Eight final, the blue ribbon Maadi Cup race. As Rowing New Zealand put it, the epic U18 boys coxed eight race was a showdown between CBHS and College – traditional rivals and the two most dominant boys’ schools at the regatta – which will linger long in the memory for all those watching. The College crew – Thomas Tothill, Alex Todhunter, Will Chaffey, Guy Chaffey, Jack Elvy, Fletcher Anderson, Lachie Hazlett, Jamie Batchelor and Fin Smith (coxswain) – shot out to an early lead and were ahead by half a length approaching the halfway point. Sadly, this was as far ahead as they were going to get. In the second half, CBHS slowly but surely pegged College back and managed to open out to a one seat lead with 300m to go. Unfortunately, despite College’s best efforts, CBHS won by 1.4 seconds. A huge thank you to coaches Malcolm McIntyre, Tony O’Connor, Andrew Taylor, Anthony McNamara and Jimmy Healey who set out the blueprint for this result at the start of the season. Following the regatta Alex Todhunter, Jack Elvy and Jamie Batchelor were offered New Zealand Junior trials and the entire U17 Eight were offered South Island U18 trials. A final acknowledgement must go to the parents who spend countless hours assisting College rowing in many capacities. From fundraising to help with plant and equipment purchases, through to cooking meals for the boys while they are away at training camps, their support and assistance enables the Christ’s College Rowing Club to be the club it is today. Thank you.
