Although on paper the season didn't look successful, team spirit remained very high, the players had fun, learned new skills and remained tight. The team was superbly led by Anton Marshall and Marcus Hamilton, and such was their leadership and commitment that the coaching staff gave the boys their own space to develop some of their own patterns. A huge thank you to Gary Tibbotts and Xade Halbert-Pere for their expertise and assistance throughout the season, and to the wonderful parents who came week after week to support their boys and the team. Congratulations to the boys who won the following awards:

12–60, and St Bede’s College, 5–40. It looked like it was going to be tough. But after these matches, we changed a few systems, focused on looking after the ball – and went through the last 11 games losing only once. We even beat Christchurch Boys’ High School for the first time in two decades. The U15A won the Metro U15 Section 1 title – beating CBHS in the final after a convincing win over St Thomas in the semi-final. The team played some superb rugby at the South Island U15 tournament – beating Southland Boys’ High School, Waitaki Boys’ High School, Marlborough Boys’ College and Timaru Boys’ High School to win for only the second time (and the first time in 20 years) and be declared South Island champions. All players were exceptional and it is impossible to select one outstanding performer. Our front row did not concede an inch all season. Abe McArthur, Ashtyn Cassidy, Jack Smith, Toby Beresford and Archer Oliver often swamped the opposition. They were humble but not gentle giants in all matches they played. The back five could play in every position, with Reilly Reed, Johnny Lee and Jayden Sa all amazing lineout forwards. We were fortunate to have so many ball carriers. Hendrix Taylor, Johnny Lee and Jayden Sa wreaked havoc on opposition defence systems. Hanjun Kim, Jaiden Beer and Flynn Topham were our openside flankers and seemed to thrive on driving into the scrum, which was not always so good for their health. Archer Oliver helped out when necessary. Sam Dickie and Sam Idiens were our dynamic half-backs, with Sam Idiens often covering other positions in the backline due to his speed and fitness. These players had to read the game and lead the attack, and they initiated some spectacular tries. We were fortunate to have an attacking backline. The boys initially

Played 11, won 3, lost 8.

It has been a mixed year for the College U16A rugby team in 2019. We started the season very strongly, with a highly enthusiastic bunch of young men, including several from the Linwood Club who joined us under the partnership scheme College has with Linwood. In pre-season we looked strong and hungry, and seemed destined for a great season. Once the season started we comprehensively beat St Andrew's College, and after pushing Christchurch Boys’ High School B strongly were only beaten after the referee ruled a disallowed try in the final moments. Injuries took a major toll on the team, however, and as the season progressed we continued to lose key players at key times. While playing a very strong St Bede's College team, for example, we were competitive all the way through except for a five minute spell when they managed to score three tries – and during that game we lost three players to significant injuries, plus two others to minor ones. By the time the semi-finals rolled around we were down to 14 fit players, after starting the season with 24, and were unable to field a team. The season also ended with a disappointing quad tournament, where we won one and lost two games.
