Angus Thorne – One word: fast! A gutsy winger who will make you pay if you miss a tackle. Tom Thyne – Reads the game well, very skilful, leads from the front. Oscar Wells-Swann – Trains and plays hard. Scored some unbelievable tries over the season with his share pace.

Training got promptly underway at the end of Term 1, and the boys soon started getting used to their new teammates. In pre-season trials, we had a good 19–7 win against the Burnside Bombers and a 5–21 loss to the Christchurch Tomahawks. It was hard to gauge how the season was going to go from this, but the boys were enjoying the sport. In Term 2 our games progressed as follows:

• win against St Thomas of Canterubry College, 41–26

and wet, but the boys played one of the best first halves they had played all season. Sadly, this was not enough. Burnside pushed hard in the second half to defeat us 14–34. This placed us fourth overall in the 2019 competition. We had some fantastic players in the team, but a few stood out for their engagement, effort and perseverance. Conor Nicholson was awarded the Captain’s Award. Thomas Douglas was recognised as our Most Improved Forward, while Jack Barr was our Most Improved Back. Beau Armstrong was awarded the Jack Bristed Best and Fairest Award, and the Most Valuable Player award went to Will Gould. Liam Orr deserves a special mention for keeping things running as our Year 12 assistant coach and manager throughout the season.

• loss to Burnside Bombers, 12–59

• default to St Bede’s Black due to injuries

• win against Christchurch Tomahawks, 52–15

A highlight included defeating the St Andrew’s Steelers in front of Crusaders head coach Scotty “Razor” Robinson, who spent the whole game loudly coaching the StAC team from the sideline. We also were able to claim the Challenge Shield from the Christchurch Tomahawks in our final game of the term. This was the last game for coach Joe Eccleton, before he left to take on the role of principal at Cashmere High School. In Term 3 we were joined by replacement coach Mike Palomero. First up, we defeated the Christchurch Knights 40–32, but the following weekend were beaten by St Bede’s Red 0–34, passing them the Challenge Shield. Entering the semi-finals, we were fourth on the table and pitted against the Burnside Bombers for the third time. The weather was bleak, cold
