first event at Lake Hood in the run up to the 2020 nationals, placing 5th out of eight over the event. During the Top of the South teams competition in Picton in tournament week, we started rusty and blew several starts in earlier races, but hung in there to avoid relegation from the silver fleet by winning key races. When conditions became breezier and more consistent on the second day, the team was able to fight hard and came away with enough wins to be placed 7th in the South Island overall, after three round robins. It was a reasonable result, given our relatively new team with many younger sailors. In April, Tom O’Connor, Sam Kelly, Max Luisetti, Louis Hitchings, Cole

of their round one races. These early successes continued on day two, with a promotion to the silver fleet our main goal and the ideal and very welcome conclusion to the first round. Steady winds for the next two days helped as we met harder teams, but two lighter days saw us fall back in the rankings, although surviving the relegation threat back down to bronze. We came back strongly in our favoured stronger winds to win seven out of 10 of our races on the last day, which placed College 18th overall, after being 20th in 2018 and 33rd the previous year. It was a smaller yet much tougher field, given we had to fight hard to stay in the silver fleet over the six day event. A very big thank you to our third skipper in the teams sailing events, and to our younger squad members, Oscar Chaffey and Louis Hitchings, who proved to be bright talents on the horizon. The Kinder Grigg Cup for Contribution to Sailing was shared by team stalwart Matthew Bayley

and Rupert Limbrick, our only travelling national representative in the last few seasons. Sam Kelly was awarded the cup for Most Improved Sailor. It is once again a pleasure to acknowledge the support of Michael and Annabel Bayley, who have helped out at so many sailing events. They will be sorely missed as we approach our first South Island based sailing nationals in 2020
