you to Eloise Nevin for her help and expertise with this event. The South Island secondary schools championships were held at Cardrona this year. The conditions were fantastic, especially for spring. College was once again well represented, particularly in the slalom, by two teams. Team 1 of Sam Hadley, Tom Picton-Warlow, Ned Botherway and Luc Botherway, and team 2 of William Picton-Warlow, Charles Lord, Sam Willems and Thomas Johnston. Team 1 came 1st in the giant slalom, while team 2 took 2nd place. Sam Hadley was the fastest individual racer, with Tom Picton-Warlow a close second. A few boys decided to show off their creative flair in the slopestyle event, while I tried not to watch. Sam Willems was the most successful College entrant in this category, finishing 7th. A huge thank you to the Hadley family for their excellent hospitality in Wanaka, and to Emma Bracken for her assistance with the trip.

Two of our skiers deserve special mention this year. Tom Picton-Warlow has been based down in Wanaka for the winter season, training most days. He is shortly to commence his end of season finals at Cardrona, followed by a New Zealand youth selection training camp. We wish Tom well for this selection. This year, Sam Hadley claimed the titles of New Zealand FIS junior slalom champion, giant slalom champion and U21 overall national alpine champion. He received a bronze medal at the New Zealand national alpine slalom championships (Open Men), and a bronze at the Australian national alpine giant slalom championships (Open Men). Congratulations to Sam on these significant achievements. Well done to all the boys who competed in these key events this year. They were a credit to their school.

The College ski teams had a great season in 2019. The Canterbury schools ski and snowboard championships were held at Mt Hutt and, thankfully, the weather played ball and everything ran to schedule. Three College teams competed in the ski racing, but we were again left wanting in the area of snowboarding. Ski race team 1 was composed of Sam Hadley, Ned Botherway, Luc Botherway and William Picton-Warlow; team 2 of Thomas Johnston, Louis Elworthy, Edward Davidson and Barnaby Middleton; and team 3 of Charles Lord and Sam Willems. Team 1 came 1st, retaining the interschool ski trophy; team 2 finished in 5th place; and sadly, Sam and Charles crashed on their second runs, and therefore didn’t place. Sam Hadley got the fastest individual time, winning the Hamilton Challenge Cup for the second consecutive year. Thank
