SPORT Table Tennis

MiC: Lesley Anderson-McKenna Assistant: Shelly Jackson Table tennis once again proved to be a popular winter sport option, with 23 boys signing up at the beginning of the season. We entered four teams in the Wednesday competition, two teams in the B grade and two teams in the C grade. We were fortunate to secure two highly qualified coaches, Michael Hamel and Alex Zhou, who made training both challenging and fun for the boys. The boys’ skill levels improved noticeably over the season. Following on from the success of the 2018 season, three of our four teams played in the semi-finals this year. Our B1 team – Steven Zhang, Justin Yin, Matthew Zhang, Takato Watanabe and Tim Wang – were strong competitors and enjoyed the success of their season. They met Burnside High School Boys B in the semi-finals, unfortunately without

number one player Steven Zhang. As a result, they were unable to secure a win and ultimately finished 4th in the competition, after losing to Burnside Girls A in their final game. This is a team of young players and we can look forward to another strong season next year. Our C1 team, which played in the B grade competition, was also very competitive. The team – Angus Murray, Oli Aikawa, Tom McFarlane and Ben Shipston – lost only one game in the lead up to the finals, where they played Emmanuel Christian School. The boys played well and it was an exciting game, fit for a final, but they were unable to beat Emmanuel on the day. Our other C grade players enjoyed the Wednesday competition and we thank them for their enthusiasm and commitment.

Once again, the interhouse competition was a highlight of the season. This was played, as usual, with enthusiasm and good humour, and resulted in an exciting final between Richards and Julius, one of the closest in a number of years. It was a great game to watch, and both teams were cheered on by enthusiastic supporters. Julius House won on countback. It is always encouraging to see how popular this competition is. 2019 has been a successful and enjoyable season and I thank all the boys for their contribution. I particularly want to thank Shelly Jackson, who assisted me this year, and Michael Hamel and Alex Zhou, who so generously shared their expertise and experience with the boys.
