MAIN DUTIES

Purpose of the Job The prime role of the Energy and Sustainability Manager is to spearhead sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing the College’s carbon footprint, enhancing energy efficiency, driving cost efficiency, and promoting sustainable resource management. This is a newly created, exciting role, that underscores Birkbeck’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. As a leading educational institution dedicated to fostering innovative research and education, Birkbeck recognises the need to address global energy challenges, and to work to implement sustainable practices across all facets of our operations as part of a phased approach. Reporting to the Director of Estates and Facilities, you will work with key stakeholders, staff, and students across the College as well as external partners to provide a crucial strategic oversight and organisation for priority initiatives, including: • Creating and nurturing a sustainability culture and community for staff and students, to ensure that sustainability is embedded in all day-to-day College operations (e.g., catering, procurement, travel, construction, teaching and learning etc.). • Engaging internal and external stakeholders and raising awareness of sustainability initiatives across operations, research, education, and innovation. • Creating and implementing the College’s Energy and Carbon Management Plan(ECMP), which will identify Birkbeck’s net zero target that will be adopted by the College and achieved by the delivery of phased actions and initiatives. • Promoting and facilitating collaborations between the academic and operational aspects of the College. Strategic and Planning • Lead on policy development and strategic agenda across the College. • Establish appropriate governance structures are in place to ensure appropriate decision -making, and culture, and controls drive the College to get consistently great outcomes. • Ensure policies, standards, and design guides are maintained in line with legislation and best practice. • Ensure that the University in a position to benefit from external funding opportunities relating to Sustainability and Energy through the timely preparation of grant applications. Energy and Carbon Management Plan • Leading on the production of Birkbeck’s Energy and Carbon Management Plan (ECMP) to identify a net zero pathway(s) with actions and targeted policies across Scopes 1, 2 and 3. • Manage and lead consultant appointed to produce the ECMP ensuring that project programme is on time, budget is not exceeded, and all agreed outputs are delivered. • Ensure the ECMP is integrated within Birkbeck’s ISO14001 Environmental Management System and is aligned to our Estates Strategy and Heat Decarbonisation Plan (HDP). • Leading the College wide roll out and implementation of the ECMP. To include the development of policies and procedures, forming of delivery action groups, establish data collection regime, and undertaking of periodic reviews etc. Promote Sustainable Working Practices and Cultural Change • Demonstrate exceptional communication skills by conveying information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences including key stakeholders, staff members, and student groups. Tailor communication style and content to suit different level understanding and background.

• Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and external partners, to promote sustainability initiatives and inspire change. • Organise and participate in events, workshops, and campaigns to raise awareness and engagement in sustainability issues. Waste Management • Manage and monitor waste across the College’s estate. • Develop and drive a waste resource efficiency strategy for the College to reduce the total amount of waste produced and embed principles of the circular economy. • Work collaboratively with Estate & Facilities and Catering along with the College’s waste management contractor to drive continuous improvement in waste reduction. Energy Management • Monitor and report on energy consumption, and work to reduce Birkbeck’s energy costs and carbon emissions. • Lead on emery management and their relationships including gas, power, and the College’s Contracting Authority. • Lead on the procurement of energy management software that brings data driven intelligence to track, monitor, and optimise energy across Birkbeck’s buildings/estate. • Identify billing issues & technical meter faults (water, electricity, gas) and correct issues as they arise. Environmental Compliance • Responsible for maintaining Birkbeck’s ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) certification. • Ensuring compliance with all relevant environmental legislation, regulation, and standards. • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of regulatory changes and best practices in energy and sustainability management.
