Revealing the Truth About Islam
And They Ask You About the Spirit (Part 4)
By Usama Dakdok January 2025
John 1:1-3, we read: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.” That Word of God actually became flesh as we read in verse 14, and that is what we cel-
In the Old Testament, we read in 1 Samuel 10:10: “… then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.” Here we see the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, came upon Saul, the first King of Israel. Also, as we men- tioned earlier, David asked God not to take His Holy Spirit from him. As it was in the case of Saul and David in the Old Testament, we see this in the New Testament. We read in 1 Corinthians 3:16: “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” Let us examine verses in the Bible which speak about the three persons of God (the Trin- ity). The Bible has a clear declaration of God in the New Testament of Himself to be triune, three persons, not two or four. In some verses we read about the Father and the Son. In John 5:18, we read, “Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.” In other verses we read about the Father and the Holy Spirit. We read in Romans 8:16 that “the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Most importantly, we read about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. For example, we read in Matthew 3:16-17: “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And sud- denly a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’” In this passage, we see Jesus coming up out of the water, the Holy Spirit coming down on Him in the form of a dove, and the Father speaking from Heaven declaring to us that Jesus is HIS beloved Son. Again, we find in Acts 1:8: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” We also find in John 14:16: “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.” For more information about Islam, visit our website. In our first three articles, we addressed the fundamental question of the spirit in Islam by exploring how Muslim scholars have grappled with interpreting the identity and role of the spirit
as mentioned in the Qur’an. With each verse analyzed, the inconsistencies grew, leaving questions about the true nature of Allah’s spirit. We also examined additional verses that refer- ence the spirit, further highlighting the ambi- guities within the Qur’an and how these verses contradict Islamic claims of clarity. When we examine the Holy Bible and search for the words “Holy Spirit” or the “Spirit of God,” we find them written throughout the pages of both the Old and New Testaments. We see that it is written very clearly and know what God meant when referring to the Spirit of God or the Holy Spirit in that He was speaking of the third person of God. However, in the Qur’an, we have seen that Muslims do not even know what Allah meant by what he said. That is why you will not find a Jewish or Christian theologian who will disagree in what is meant by the Spirit of God. In the case of Islam, there are around 17 expla- nations as to what the Holy Spirit is, but in the Bible there is only one! He is the third person of the Triune God. The first time the “Spirit of God” is mentioned in the Bible is found in Gen- esis 1:2, “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Notice here that the Spirit of God exists from the beginning before creation, which makes Him eternal, uncreated. Who is the eter- nal uncreated but God? In Psalm 51:11, Prophet David was praying to God and asking Him, “Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.” Here we must ask the following question. How can the Spirit of God exist above the surface of the water, which actually means everywhere in the universe, omnipresence, and at the same time be inside David’s being? In the Old Testament, we know that God spoke. This can be seen clearly at creation. We know that God is unchangeable. So before He created any- thing, was God still speaking? If yes, to whom? Notice in Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, and 29, the words “God said” are present. The spokesman here is Jesus Christ who created everything. How do we know this? If we go to
ebrate at Christmas.
However, if we go back to Genesis 1:26, we read in the plural: “God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” Notice the words “our” and “us” in the Hebrew texts are plural words. Who is our? Who are these plu- rals? Some of the doctrines in the Old Testa- ment could not be understood until we opened the pages of the New Testament, for there God clarified many things about Himself. We, as Christians, do not make God to be as we wish Him to be, but we simply accept His declaration of Himself to us without arguments or any dis- putes. God said He is one God, as Muslims claim him to be (for in reality, Muslims worship Allah, the god of this world, who is Satan). How- ever, God declared to us in the New Testament that He is Triune, meaning three persons. That is why we believe in the Trinity. Not because the word “Trinity” is mentioned anywhere in the Bible, but simply because God declared in the Bible that He is Triune: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Had God introduced Himself to us as ten persons, we would have called him “Tenity.” Can we prove that throughout the Bible? When we look for the words “Spirit of God” throughout the Bible, we find it exists 26 times.
