CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
The fourth and final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival is one of the most keenly anticipated race days of the year for all racing enthusiasts. TAB Champions Stakes Day has, since 2022, become the day of decision for the sprinters, the milers and the middle-distance horses, all under classic weight-for-age conditions at Group 1 status. Each of the three offers $3 million in prizemoney. Some are calling it the best two hours of racing in the world as the races follow each other as a crescendo to this magnificent Cup Week. The 1200-metre Darley Champions Sprint is the race that in recent years has seen triumphs by champions Imperatriz and Nature Strip. The VRC Champions Mile, over 1600 metres, traces its history back to the 1880s. Last year’s winner Pride of Jenni has found a place in the hearts of racegoers, while 2022 winner Alligator Blood recorded seven Group 1 wins in his illustrious career. The TAB Champions Stakes over 2000 metres continues the tradition of the Mackinnon Stakes, and it too has an amazing history of champion victors dating back to Rising Fast, Phar Lap, Gloaming and Carbine. In recent years my personal favourite, Zaaki, won twice in succession and last year it was the brilliant mare, Atishu. The three champion races are supported by the weight-for-age Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2600 metres, another race steeped in history. Makybe Diva won in 2002, the year before the first of her three Melbourne Cup triumphs. Also on the card today is the TAB Matriarch Stakes for mares, four years old and upwards. The World Horse Racing Grand Handicap is a tribute to the VRC and the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s proud position as part of the World Horse Racing organisation. Trackside isn’t just for equine champions—this year, we’re thrilled to welcome Olympic heroes like Melbourne Cup Carnival ambassador Ariarne Titmus. These remarkable athletes bring inspiration to the Carnival, celebrating excellence alongside their racing counterparts. It is an honour and privilege to welcome you to TAB Champions Stakes Day at Flemington.

100 years since ...
Gloaming‘s 1924 Champions Stakes
BY ANDREW LEMON
A ustralian racegoers in the past twenty years have been blessed by the presence of three of the greatest horses in the history of thoroughbred racing. Makybe Diva, uniquely, won the most coveted handicap race in the world three times in succession, on the third occasion carrying top weight. Black Caviar, the sprinter, was never defeated in any of her 25 starts, all of them quality races. She won 22 Group races (15 Group 1) across five Australian cities and at Royal Ascot. She set course and track records.
14
1924 - 2024
She won the rich VRC Newmarket Handicap carrying 1.5 kilograms over weight for age. Winx, a middle distance specialist, strung together a sequence of 33 successive top-class victories before her retirement in 2019. Unlike Black Caviar, she had tasted defeat in earlier starts. Her total of 37 career wins (a record 25 at Group 1) included four Cox Plates, three Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick and two Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. These achievements surpassed those of earlier turf legends. Phar Lap accumulated 37 wins, 14 in succession. Carbine was only once unplaced, with 33 wins, 15 in succession. Bernborough in the late 1940s strung together 15 great wins. As Black Caviar was extending her winning streak during 2012, she passed two early champions. Until then, the Australasian record for successive wins in first-class company was 19, shared by the mare Desert Gold and her contemporary Gloaming, the bay gelding with a white blaze, whose racing career stretched from 1918 to 1925. ‘Australasian’ is the key word, for most of the wins of both horses were in New Zealand. Desert Gold was New

Zealand owned and bred. Just ten of her races, and four wins, were in Australia. Gloaming’s story is more complicated, and more illustrious. He was bred in Victoria at Melton by Ernest E.D. Clarke, younger brother of Sir Rupert Turner Havelock Clarke (the 2nd Baronet). At the Victorian yearling sales in 1917, Clarke sold the colt for 230 guineas to Sydney bloodstock agent Harry Chisholm, acting for a prosperous New Zealand owner, George Dean Greenwood.

Gloaming was trained thereafter in New Zealand by Richard Mason, but his first two—sensational—starts were in Sydney. He set a race record for both the 9 furlong (1810m) Chelmsford Stakes and the 12 furlong (2414m) AJC Derby. Returning to New Zealand he strung together nine wins and three seconds that season before falling in a race at Wellington. He recovered unhurt. This was the sole time in his long career of 67 starts that Gloaming finished unplaced. His unbroken sequence of 19 wins began with Craven Plate at Randwick in 1919. The next 18 were in New Zealand.
16
1924 - 2024
Altogether, Gloaming made four visits back to Australia, but until he was nine he never raced in Victoria. His visit here for the spring carnival of 1924 created huge anticipation. Rain was predicted. Greenwood declared he would not start Gloaming on a wet track. By now Gloaming was nine, with 51 wins on the board, his latest two in Sydney. Victoria Derby Day attracted a huge crowd, many intent on seeing the famous Gloaming for the first time, in the 10 furlong (2011m) Melbourne Stakes. As when fans flocked to Flemington hoping to see Makybe Diva, Black Caviar and Winx add to their exceptional records, so racegoers packed around the Mounting Yard—in use that spring for the very first time— and took up every vantage point. The rain held off, The hero did not disappoint. Ridden by his New Zealand jockey George Young, and starting odds-on favourite, Gloaming easily won in a field of five, with Whittier (a dual Caulfield Cup winner) and Easingwold (a Cox Plate winner) in his wake. Downpours came later in the week, robbing Melburnians of the chance of seeing Gloaming race again. He went home to New Zealand, won his final five races on the trot, and retired with glory: 67 starts, 57 wins, 9 second places. The weight-for-age Melbourne Stakes, won that day in 1924 by Gloaming, had been part of the Derby Day card since the 1860s. In 1936 it became the Mackinnon Stakes to honour the late Chairman of the VRC. In 2016, the Club moved the Mackinnon to the final day of the spring carnival, and in 2022 the concept of Champions Day began. The Mackinnon became one of the three headline Champions races. Great horses have won this race, twenty Melbourne Cup winners among them. Gloaming stands in a league of his own.

HISTORY OF THE STAKES
TAB CHAMPIONS STAKES
The TAB Champions Stakes, first run in 1869 as the Melbourne Stakes, has been a key weight-for-age contest at the Melbourne Cup Carnival for over 150 years. Originally held on Derby Day, the race now takes place on the final day of the Carnival, capping off four days of elite racing. Winners include 15 horses that have completed the Melbourne Cup-Stakes double, among them Carbine, Phar Lap, Peter Pan, and Rising Fast. The race has also been won by champions like Wakeful, Lonhro, and So You Think, as well as international stars such as Side Glance, Gailo Chop, and Magic Wand. The Victorian-bred, New Zealand-trained, Hall of Famer, Gloaming, won eight of his ten races as a nine-year-old including the 1924 Melbourne Stakes, a career in which he won 57 of his 67 career starts. In 2023, Atishu, with James McDonald aboard, powered home to take the TAB Champions Stakes. It was McDonald’s third Group 1 victory of the week, solidifying his status as one of the country’s leading riders.

HISTORY OF THE MILE
VRC CHAMPIONS MILE
The VRC Champions Mile, perhaps better known as the Cantala Stakes, has a rich history that dates back to 1919. Introduced on Victoria Derby Day, the original Cantala Stakes was established to honour Septimus Miller, a long-serving member of the Victoria Racing Club committee, who dedicated over forty years to the organisation, including twelve years as Chairman. Miller’s wish was for the race to be named not after himself but after his property, Cantala, located on Dandenong Road, Caulfield. Originally run as a mile event, the Cantala Stakes moved to the Final Day in 1960, rebranded as the George Adams Handicap in honour of the founder of Tattersalls lotteries. Over the years, the race has been known by several sponsors’ names, reflecting its evolving status within the racing calendar. The Cantala Stakes made a return to Victoria Derby Day in 2019 and has now returned even bigger and better as part of TAB Champions Stakes Day, showcasing the depth of talent in the mile division. Legendary horseman Bart Cummings trained six winners of the race with the likes of Taj Rossi, Maybe Mahal and Shaftesbury Avenue, while Roy Higgins takes the riding honours with five wins in the race, including one on the mighty grey Gunsynd. In 2023, Pride Of Jenni secured her second Group 1 success in the space of a week with another breath-taking, trademark, front-running win.

HISTORY OF THE SPRINT
DARLEY CHAMPIONS SPRINT
For sprinters, the Champions Sprint, run over 1200 metres along the iconic Straight Six at Flemington, serves as the ultimate test of speed and agility. The inaugural winner of the race was Kiwi mare Karina, conquering a field of 27 runners down the grandstand rail. This prestigious race has undergone several name changes throughout its history, previously known as the Craven ‘A’ Stakes, Gadsden Stakes, Salinger Stakes, Patinack Farm Classic, Darley Sprint Classic, and the VRC Sprint Classic, among others. The race was granted Group 1 status in the inaugural Group Race Classifications for the 1979-1980 season. Throughout its history, many sprinting stars of the turf have etched their names into the Champions Sprint annals, including dual winners, River Rough and Planet Ruler, and more recently, the unbeatable Black Caviar and sprint king Nature Strip. Bart Cummings leads the way with six wins in the race from 1973 to 2008 whille modern-day star jockey James McDonald has three wins in the race, sharing the honours with Robert Heffernan, who claimed a hat-trick of wins from 1979 to 1981. The 2023 edition of the race was won by the brilliant mare, Imperatriz, capping off a brilliant spring campaign for the Te Akau mare. 2023 DARLEY CHAMPIONS SPRINT WINNER IMPERATRIZ
