secondtemps.

Not all municipalities in Ontario have business licence bylaws. In Russel County, the City of Clarence-Rockland has a business licence regulation but Russell Township does not. Council agreed with another recommendation from Gatien for a voluntary registry of merchants and businesses operating within the township. This is one idea, he noted, that several people attending the public meetings suggested and which received huge support from others. EMBRUN | Local merchants and other businessownersinRussellTownshipwon’t have to buy a licence to keep their doors open after all. Council is set to approve a recommendation from its economic development director to drop plans for a mandatory business licence bylaw. Daniel Gatien made the recommendation during his report to council at its May 7 committee of the whole session. “I recommend that council does not proceed with the proposed business licence policy for the township,” Gatien said. His recommendation is based on results of two public information and feedback sessions on the proposed business licensing bylaw during which at least 100 local business owners and others expressed opposition to the idea. The municipal office also received numerous emails, letters and phone calls from those opposed to the idea. “It seemed that everyone who participated in the meetings did not support the proposed policy,” Gatien said. “In addition, the participants did express their distrust and lack of confidence in council and the administration.
