Day 1: Melbourne - Ballarat (116km/ 72 miles/ 1.5 hours) Travel west today to the city of Ballarat — a living memorial of the Victorian goldrush of the 1850s. Visit Sovereign Hill, where Australia’s history comes to life — from the hustle and bustle of Main Street where costumed ladies and gents parade their wealth, to the excitement of the Red Hill Gully Diggings where you can pan for real gold and it’s yours to keep. With a rich manufacturing heritage, the town is now enjoying a resurgence as one of the fastest growing economies in Australia. Take some time to explore the local parks and gardens or tour the local craft breweries. Standard: Rydges Geelong In the morning take the Searoad Ferries crossing to the Mornington Peninsula — one of Victoria’s most picturesque destinations. The area has attracted chefs, wine makers and artists alike, making it a truly unique place to visit. Enjoy a visit to the town of Mornington; home to many boutiques, cafés and restaurants, and also Victoria’s longest running midweek regional market. Or why not unwind in the Peninsula Hot Springs with admission available at an additional supplement? Specialising in cool climate wines such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and a variety of top quality local produce, you’ll be spoiled for choice during your day here.
