BEST TIME TO VISIT: Queensland is warm year-round. In the northern tropics, around Cairns and Port Douglas, summer (Dec-Mar) brings a huge amount of rainfall meaning winter (May-Oct) is a better time to visit with temperatures averaging around 30°C. TIME DIFFERENCE: GMT +10 hours. ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE Diving at the Great Barrier Reef, one of nature’s greatest wonders, and coming face-to-face with a giant maori wrasse. They might not be pretty, but at least they’re friendly! BEST FOR KIDS Head for the Gold Coast, where the theme parks make this Australia’s answer to Florida. Kids of all ages will love Warner Bros, Movie World, Sea World and Dream World. SPLASH OUT Recapture the golden age of rail as you glimpse Queensland’s stunning coast from aboard the prestigious Spirit of Queensland train.
LIVE LIKE A LOCAL The sun’s rays are strong in Queensland, so you’ll want to follow the local advice of ‘slip, slop, slap’ – slip on a t-shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat. WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS Fraser Island, on Australia’s Nature Coast, is the world’s largest sand island, and boasts an amazing variety of wildlife including lizards, pure-breed dingoes and native birds.
FLIGHT INFORMATION: Brisbane is well served by many major airlines, with connections via Dubai on Emirates and Qantas, and through Asia on Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Malaysian and Thai Airways. FLYING TIME FROM UK: Approx. 23 hours.
