A&V Analyzes 2022 Flexo Trends by Greg Kishbaugh

Flexo Print Market To Reach $188.9B Global demand for flexo printing will reach $172.2 billion in 2022, with a total of 6.80 trillion A4 print equivalents produced, according to new data from Smithers. Forecasts published in The Fu- ture of Flexographic Printing to 2027 are that a compound annu- al growth rate of 1.9 percent will increase demand to $188.9 billion over the next five years (at constant prices). Across the same period vol- ume growth will increase at a fast- er 2.5 percent CAGR seeing output reach 7.68 trillion A4 print equiva- lents in 2027. “As the market evolves, flexo will benefit from continuing growth in demand for packaging print and labels as an increasingly cost-com- petitive alternative to gravure and offset litho in these applications; but does also face the risk of los- ing some market share to higher throughput inkjet presses, in nar- row web and corrugated segments over the Smithers forecast period,” the report stated.

T he flexographic printing and packaging industry has long been a driving force in innovation for the global print marketplace, as reported in a new report from Anderson & Vreeland, Bryan, Ohio, which analyzes the trends the com- pany anticipates in the year ahead. Advancements in print

speed, color management, automation, carbon emission re- duction, and more will motivate Original Equipment Manu- facturers (OEMs) to create new equipment and application solutions that elevate efficiency and productivity. Anderson & Vreeland outlines four distinct trends the com- pany foresees affecting the flexo industry in 2022. Supply Chain Disruption Management Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, in- dustries across the board have struggled to overcome setbacks

2022 Trends (Cont’d from Page 1)

Higher Levels of Automation Automation has been at the forefront of flexo innovation for years and we will be seeing an in- crease in digitized capabilities in 2022. To reduce manual processes in every stage of production, OEMs have made great progress in automating prepress, plateroom, and press room functions with the end goal of fully automating time-consuming processes. Considering the recent upsurge in labor shortages and an increased need for skilled labor, printing companies can expect to see new equipment that offers higher levels of au- tomation in the upcoming year. Advanced automation is an important step for the printing and packaging industry and it should be adopted to stay on track with the industry’s trajec- tory. Current levels of automation already offer a lot of benefits, such as reduced manual labor, less human error, and reduction in waste. Automated equipment will only continue to evolve to make production speeds faster, more customizable, and more sustainable. Additionally, as new variants of COVID-19 complicate labor shortages and work- place capacities, advances in automation will help make worksites safer by minimizing the number of physical hands involved in the production process. A&V recommends that converters partner with a

caused by supply chain disruptions. This complica- tion won’t be leaving the flexo press industry any- time soon, unfortunately. But recent developments in inventory management technology are becoming available to help companies significantly alleviate the effects of unexpected stock-outs. Printing and packaging companies can reduce the amount of supply chain issues by getting ahead of inventory stock levels. The best way to get ahead is by developing a proactive plan of action that in- cludes forecasting inventory usage based on a con- verter’s most critical supplies three to six months in advance and gaining clear visibility of inventory at all times to avoid disruption. However, the biggest development in inventory management is automatic processing. Investing in an automated inventory management solution, such as the Vendor Managed Inventory System (VMI), will reduce the amount of manual work and time required and improve agility. The Intelligent VMI uses the latest RFID technology to monitor invento- ry in real-time for proactive ordering and predictive supply planning. Implementing this software into a company’s production next year will reduce the effects of supply chain disruptions and lead to a more organized workflow overall.

Corrugated print is said to remain the largest seg- ment of the flexo print market, with 36.8 percent share by volume in 2022. The need to produce shorter print runs, and man- age new demands for variable data print, is said to stimulate further development of hybrid (flexo inkjet) configurations, and the adoption of CTP and other automation features, and in-line finishing to improve order turnaround. Another important development for press OEMs is the demand for medium web-width flexo machin- ery, with specialists in both narrow web label and wide-format central impression (CI) facing differ- ent challenges to adapt to this. Another focus for R&D is the effective integration of electron beam (EB) curing stations and inks for flexo print, which is especially suited for high speed print on newly popular monomaterial flexible plastics substrates. In the short term the flexo market is coping to adapt to rising raw material prices, which are affect- ing the cost of inks, other consumables, and print- ing plates. According to the report, as plate supply moves toward stabilization across 2022, interest in a lower environmental profile for print jobs will fos- ter wider interest in water wash flexo plates, and improvements in anilox roller technology on press. All American Label Merges With Western Shield All American Label & Packaging, Dublin, Cali- fornia, has merged with Western Shield Label and Packaging, Rancho Dominguez, California, a pro- vider of pressure-sensitive prime labels and pack- aging solutions to the food & beverage, health & beauty, and industrials sectors. Environmentally Friendly Printing Equipment and Materials

Prioritizing the use of waste-reducing equipment and biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable ma- terials in production will continue to play a large role in the flexographic industry. With global warm- ing and carbon emission concerns at an all-time high, printing companies should look for ways to improve their power, water, landfill, and raw materials sus- tainability efforts. A proper sustainability agenda is essential in any business to ensure its longevity. Solvent-free plate cleaners and supplies are ex- pected to make a huge impact in 2022. The volatile costs of certain solvents during the pandemic made the development of new solvent-free plate technol- ogies a necessity. This has further resulted in im- provements in water-based cleaning products that eliminate harmful chemicals from final products. Beyond solvent-free developments, A&V advises companies to consider investing in non-toxic inks, water-based cleaners, renewable adhesives deriv-

should put sustainability at the forefront of their equipment and material decisions to improve both workflow and profitability. Advancement in Inkjet Technology Industry leaders seem to agree that the combina- tion of inkjet and flexographic printing is expected to have a bright future. A recent Smither Pira report forecasted that the value in the world inkjet mar- ket will rapidly increase over the next five years. Though inkjet printing has been considered a spe- cialized form of digital printing within the flexog- raphic realm, printing companies will soon see a rise in inkjet substrates and alternatives for pack- aging options.

Eco Flexibles Launches Recyclable Packaging Northamptonshire, United Kingdom-headquar- tered sustainable flexible packaging business, Eco Flexibles, has supported bakery product supplier to the retail, wholesale and foodservice sectors, Lantmännen Unibake, with the development of re- cyclable flexible packaging for its Schulstad Bake at Home range of products. As sustainable packaging continues to dominate commercial food and drink product development, Lantmännen sought to create fully recyclable pack- aging to both communicate the quality of the prod- uct and support its environmental agenda. In close collaboration, the Eco Flexibles team devel- oped and supplied a high-performing surface print- ed monopolymer film, despite the pressures of tight turnaround times and Covid-19 supply challenges. The Schulstad Bake at Home range of packaging was developed and printed with Asahi AWP water washable plates, which reportedly eliminate VOC solvent washout from the prepress process. Aiming to dispel sustainable packaging myths, Eco Flexibles seeks to show how sustainable pack- aging isn’t a compromise or concession — and can be aligned with the performance demands of to- day’s high-volume packaging. Klöckner Pentaplast Grows Sustainable Operations Klöckner Pentaplast (kp), a global supplier of re- cycled content products and high-barrier protec- tive packaging, has chosen its production facility in Beaver, West Virgina, for its multi-million dollar production expansion, adding post-consumer recy- cled content (PCR) PET capacity in North America. This expansion will further grow kp’s sustainable offering in consumer health, pharmaceutical, and food packaging markets through the addition of an extrusion line and two thermoformers, deliv- ering a total of 15,000 metric tons of new rPET/ PET capacity. More than 20 percent of Klöckner Pentaplast’s volume is made from PCR material, the company states. The installation will add 60 jobs to the West Vir- ginia facility, with commercialization beginning at the end of 2022 for the first thermoform line. The extrusion addition will be completed in mid- 2023. The completion of the second thermoform line and new production hall, which will be capable of additional capacity expansions in the future, is scheduled for the end of the fourth quarter of 2023.

Packaging Personified Adds Koenig & Bauer Press Packaging Personified, Carol Stream, Illinois, will install a new eight-color Koenig & Bauer Evo XG Mod 140 press this spring. The firm employs more than 230 between its 137,000 square-foot facility in Illinois and 105,000 square-foot facility in Michigan, with an eye toward a third facility in the future. “[The press] is a key part of our $10 million spend in the past 18 months,” said Joe Imburgia, Packag- ing Personified’s General Manager. “It is giving us a higher speed of 2,000 feet per minute and will significantly increase capacity along with higher productivity.” Unique to PPI’s press is its inline spectrophotom- eter, which allows PPI to get a valid color mea- surement all inline and help to manage density and dot gain. Recently, with a focus on sustainability, the com- pany introduced its lamination replacement films that provide an alternative material to common PE/ PET laminations. This film reportedly eliminates the need to combine multiple substrates and as a re- sult maintains recyclability while still providing the strength and rigidity necessary for many applica- tions, including pouch packaging. Packaging Personified annually receives a SQF (Safe Quality Food) certification audit that evaluates if PPI’s systems are functioning properly in order to prevent contamination, helps the company main- tain consistency, and provides third party credibili- ty to its food packaging customers. This year one of PPI’s locations achieved the highest possible score of 100 percent. Avery Dennison Opens New RFID Factory

Flexo Market News

Avery Dennison, a manufacturer of UHF RFID tags, has started operations at its new intelligent labels factory in Brazil. The new plant aims to meet the growing demand from various industry sectors within the national market and other regions in South America as driv- en by new ‘contactless’ consumer experience and omnichannel models. The new unit is reportedly the first in the country and the eighth in the world to start operating — among other facilities in China, Malaysia, Europe, the United States and Mexico. Variety Of Designs Located in Vinhedo, near São Paulo, the new plant measures an area of two thousand square meters and has the possibility to be expanded according to regional technology adoption. The factory will produce a variety of inlay designs, available in dry or wet formats, with products for industries such as apparel, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, automo- tive, aviation and more. Intelligent labels have been widely adopted in many markets as they enable 99 percent plus in- ventory accuracy and can provide multiple product information, such as the provenance of materials, composition of products, date of produce and a lot more, according to the company. Thanks to RFID technology, multiple tagged products can be read within a few seconds from a distance of several me- ters and do not require line of sight. Production Capacity In addition to investments in production capacity, the new plant also hosts an innovation center, I.Lab Brazil, which is an experience center that showcas- es Avery Dennison’s digital ID technology capabili- ties, including atma.io, connected product cloud by Avery Dennison: A platform that unlocks the power of connected products by assigning unique digital IDs to everyday items, providing unparalleled end- to-end transparency by tracking, storing and man- aging all the events associated with each individual product — from source to consumer and beyond to enable circularity.
