Bigger Is Not Always Better
The belief that bigger teams automatically translate to a better product or service is a common misconception. During Franklin’s busy summer months, a large, well-staffed team may seem like the obvious and best solution. However, team size doesn’t always equate to success. Smaller teams can often outperform their larger counterparts. Large teams can become bogged down by communication hurdles and slow decision- making processes. Here’s why smaller, well-coordinated teams can be a recipe for success. • Financial Return: As employee owners, team size should mean something quite different. Most importantly, larger teams mean dividing Franklin’s profit and success among more owners, reducing the ESOP benefit. For example, if Franklin’s profit is divided among 700 owners instead of 600, each owner’s share decreases significantly. This may seem counterintuitive, as in many areas of life, sharing is for the betterment of family, community, and self- improvement. However, the Franklin value of “Strive” is to build financial wealth. Receiving less profit for time and hard work runs opposite to this value and the goals of an owner. • Agility and Speed: Large teams can become cumbersome, struggling to adapt to changing market demands. Consider the example of traditional car manufacturers versus Tesla. While established car companies with vast resources wrestle with internal approvals and
legacy systems, Tesla’s smaller, more agile team can quickly
iterate and bring electric vehicles to market faster.
Similarly, video game developer Valve, known for its innovative titles like Half-Life and Portal, thrives with a flat hierarchy and small, self-directed teams. This
allows them to rapidly prototype ideas and respond to player feedback, keeping their games fresh and engaging.
• Clear Communication and Ownership: Communication breakdowns and diffused ownership are common pitfalls of large teams. With fewer members, a smaller team fosters a more collaborative environment. Everyone has a clearer understanding of the vision and their contributions. This sense of ownership leads to increased accountability. For example, the initial development of Instagram was driven by a small, tight-knit team. This focus on clear communication and ownership allowed them to rapidly prototype and refine the core features that would define the social media giant. • Lean and Continuous Improvement: Large team sizes can stifle creativity with layers of management and approval processes. Smaller teams, free from such bureaucracy, often become hotbeds of innovation. The success of companies like Spotify and Airbnb can be attributed to the ability of their small founding team to experiment and iterate their ideas quickly, leading to groundbreaking products that redefined their respective industries. At the end of the day, it’s not about having a large team for any possible scenario — it’s about having the right people working closely together. Smaller, focused teams help Franklin move faster, generate better ideas, and keep everyone motivated to do their best. When teams are tight-knit with everyone on the same page, it’s easier to stay nimble and get things done profitably. So, don’t be fooled by the idea that bigger is always better. It’s often the small, hardworking teams that make the biggest impact.

HIGH FIVES!
SAFE From: Aaron Sweet, Gooding To: Gooding Team
The entire team here in Gooding has been putting in the work — and it’s showing! From the store to the yard, everything is looking sharp, and all that effort just paid off in a big way. We just received the highest tour audit score since I came to Gooding! This is a direct result of your hard work, attention to detail, and pride in what we do. Thank you for showing up, stepping up, and making this place shine. Amazing job, team! Let’s keep it going!
WOW From: Justin Osterhout, Twin Falls To: Jerod Stansell, Twin Falls
One of our customers had an issue with measurements on their jobsite. Our yard was booked out, and we were scrambling

to find a solution in the already busy day. Jerod volunteered to load the material on a truck and delivered it that day. He also brought back the wrong material to be credited. Jerod is always going above
A high five goes out to Mac for assisting in job site organization. We needed to make some room so our truss drop would go smoothly. I appreciate the help, Mac. THANKS!

consistently updating the sales team on how many same-day special order deliveries we have scheduled each day. This helps us stay mindful of what actually needs to be same-day and what might be unnecessary pressure on our crew. Thanks, Javan, for looking out for other departments and trying to make their day a little easier!
Parker does a great job on picking up returns, but lately he’s been focusing on more than just “his part” of the job. He’s been sending me pics of shingle returns, too, if they’re ready when he gets lumber. This makes us all more efficient for our clients. Thanks, Parker!

In the Spotlight
IN THE SPOTLIGHT Alex Rodriguez’s Decade at Franklin Building Supply
At Franklin Building Supply, we know our greatest strength is our people. Every team member brings their own personality, skills, and story — it’s what makes us such a unique and successful family. We’re grateful for every person who chooses to be here, and we love taking the time to spotlight the individuals who make us who we are. Alex Rodriguez, a Truss Technician at our Caldwell Truss location, has been part of the Franklin Building Supply team for an incredible 10 years. Alex plays a key role in designing roof and floor framing systems for residential and commercial projects, using structural trusses that meet both safety and quality standards. His day-to-day
work involves analyzing architectural plans, collaborating with customers, and simplifying complex designs so they’re safer and more efficient to build, transport, and install. Alex doesn’t just focus on the technical side; he thrives on problem-solving and enjoys working alongside builders and fellow team members to make sure every project runs smoothly. That combination of precision, collaboration, and creativity makes him invaluable to our team. And here’s a fun fact: Rumor has it Alex makes some of the best wings around! Outside of work, Alex is motivated by his love for his family, spending as much time with them as possible. He’s also
passionate about creating and listening to music and enjoys outdoor adventures like biking, hiking, and camping. It’s people like Alex who make Franklin Building Supply more than just a workplace. His dedication, creativity, and commitment to both his craft and family inspire us all. We’re proud to call him part of our team, and we’re grateful for the 10 years (and counting!) he’s invested in helping us build not just structures, but lasting relationships.
