Since returning from the Easter break staff and students have really thrown themselves back into school life. There have been a number of trips out of school. Some of our Year 10 students went to the World of Work Conference organised by the Worshipful Company of World Traders. Our Year 12 students attended the UCAS Conference as they now start thinking about their choices once they finish their A levels.

Some of our Year 8 students had the opportunity to visit Roehampton University as part of their Teen Tech competition. We have been just as busy in school with students in Year 7 and 8 taking part in the UK Junior Maths Challenge. We also welcomed the Quirky Bird Theatre Company into school to perform for our Year 10 Drama students. GCSE and A level exams have now started for our students in Years 11 and 13. The GCSE Language speaking exams took place in the last fortnight, with the A level exams scheduled for next week. GCSE Art students have also completed their exams producing fantastic pieces exploring this year’s exam theme, ‘Lock’. Our Photography A level students have completed their exams today. Year 12 students are also currently sitting their internal exams. Finally I would like to thank our amazing PTA for the beautiful new ovens that we installed in Food Technology last week. Click here to see some images of the ovens in use . This will benefit students across the school and we all look forward to tasting the wonderful culinary delights that they now create. This generous donation would not be possible without the support of the parent community, not only through attending events run by the PTA but also through regular donations through the kindlink.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

If it seems that every time you check your newsfeed there is an alarmist article on a new peril parents must manage as they help their children steer the course through childhood to adolescence, it is most likely because that is the world we live in now. Continuous and contradictory news blasts seem designed to keep us in a state of “red alert,” or may cause us to feel guilty that we are not doing enough to protect our children from this changing world that is not the one in which we grew up, and—perhaps worse—is not one we recognize. What is a conscientious parent to do? For starters, we should not be made to feel helpless by the onslaught. The better approach? Being aware and proactive. That is the message in this week's On Educating Girls podcast from the International Coalition of Girls' Schools. Liz Joyce, a clinical social worker and school counsellor at Nashoba Brooks School talks about how parents can support their children in 'Parenting Girls in a Changing World' Previous episodes of the podcast focus on themes including: Girls who Embrace Their Introvertedness, Developing Leadership and Self-esteem in Girls, and Girls as Happy, Healthy Individuals.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

Year 13s have been very diligent in their preparation for the upcoming exams which start on Wednesday 17 May. Students will go on study leave shortly before but until then lessons will continue as normal and students are expected to attend. Details of the start of study leave and our plans for the Celebration Assemblies will be communicated next week.

Well done to all the students who sat the Photography exam this week. There is some really impressive and imaginative work on display. Next week our Fashion students will be sitting their exam and the week after that will be Art. The Summer exhibition will take place at the same time as our Celebration Assembly and parents/carers and fellow students will be able to see all the pieces our talented students have produced

BOOK OF THE MONTH

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway For Whom the Bell Tolls follows Robert Jordan, an American soldier who goes abroad to fight on the side of freedom in a war with no true heroes. Deployed to blow up a bridge in the Spanish Sierra, Jordan begins to question whether he is fighting for the right people, or if such people even exist. Produced close to the exact midpoint of his career, For Whom the Bell Tolls represents the work of a master in his prime. Operating on many different levels, the book provides an accurate and harrowing description of the Spanish Civil War, a deep and intimate view into the lives of rebels, and a fast-moving, engrossing narrative. Despite the heavy subject matter, a simple and laconic writing style allows for the reader to move swiftly along without much interruption for long and gratuitous descriptions or introspection. In a sentence or two, a picture is painted of the Spanish countryside, and the men who fight for its freedom, and its destruction. With a low barrier for entry, and so much to gain, For Whom the Bell Tolls is a worthwhile read for anyone. ~Recommended by Zach R, Year 12 student Please contact us with any queries or problems you may have.
