ADOPT-A- CORAL 2015 to 2017 saw the most devastating coral bleaching event ever witnessed by mankind. 80% of corals worldwide were bleached, with vast amounts of coral dying off, and following the bleaching, outbreaks of coral diseases were common. In the Maldives, coral populations had only recently recovered from a mass bleaching in 1998 when, in 2016, water temperatures reached 36°C, killing the majority of branching and table corals (Acropora spp and Pocillopora spp) and plate corals (Echinopora, Pachyseris and Pavona spp). Mortality reached as deep as 30 meters, leaving entire stretches of reef devoid of living coral.
