We have even implemented a robust internship program, where we bring students in from area universities like WSU, KSU, KU, and Pitt State, as well as others like the Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines, Missouri S&T, and Murray State University, to name a few. It’s the kind of positive message we want to send to all companies in the area. Safety is our top priority because working in construction can be dangerous. That’s exactly why we aim to create the safest workplace at all times and pride ourselves on being one of the safest construction companies in the state. In fact, we were recognized in 2017 by the Kansas Contractors Association when we received the Outstanding Achievement in Accident Prevention Award. To earn this honor, we reached over 400,000 total employee hours without a single injury. That’s a testament to our entire team’s commitment to safety. Cornejo & Sons strives to build relationships with those in the Wichita community through partnerships that bring value. We collaborate with many large clients, such as Koch Industries,

Spirit Aerosystems, and McConnell Air Force Base, but we don’t stop there. Our company also focuses on the residents of Wichita, working on anything our friends and neighbors may need help with — even fixing up residential driveways. In short, we do our best to be here for everyone who needs us. I like to say that we help build the community. Our company name is all over Wichita one way or another. We helped build roads, pour driveways, and pave parking lots. But we also spend a lot of time and resources contributing more. Cornejo & Sons donates to many causes, and our leaders serve on community boards throughout Wichita and the state of Kansas. We do more than build roads — we work to propel Wichita forward. These qualities are all part of the Cornejo & Sons legacy: workforce development, community involvement, and customer focus. Most people know Cornejo & Sons by the family name. The company was founded on strong principals, and from the start, it formed a strong connection between its employees and the community. Today, the Cornejo family who started it all is no longer with Cornejo & Sons, but that doesn’t mean that their spirit of community and fellowship is gone. We like to think the essence of the family that grew this company out of nothing remains with us to this day. With the legacy of Cornejo & Sons and Ritchie Corporation now operating under one brand, we have well over 100 years of aggregate and paving experience. By a rough estimate, combined, we have built over 75 percent of the roads in the Wichita area. Over the past couple of years, our company has grown and gained a new management team. We have fresh leaders who guide us and carry our ideals forward. Our aim is to take the Cornejo legacy and improve upon it, turning it into something much larger and more productive than it was when it began. Our growth also reflects Cornejo & Sons’ dedication to workforce development: we strive to hire more women and veterans and heighten

Let us introduce our amazing leadership team. GEORGESAUSSEIL, PRESIDENTOF CORNEJO & SONS Georges is an engineer by trade and holds a degree from École Polytechnique in Paris, France. Prior to joining Cornejo as president, Georges spent 35 years in the construction and construction-materials industry, including 20 years working as CEO for various construction companies ranging in size from 500 to 5,000 employees. As president, Georges constantly advocates for workforce development, community involvement, and customer focus to take Cornejo to the next level. In the community, Georges serves as chairman of the board of the Wichita Grand Opera and is also a board member of the Rotary Club of Wichita. In his free time, Georges enjoys yoga and solving the New York Times crossword puzzles. PAT SHORT, VICE PRESIDENTOFAGGREGATES Pat holds a degree in mining engineering fromMissouri S&T and an MBA from Southern Illinois University. Prior to joining Cornejo, Pat spent 25 years in the mining industrywith various aggregate companies throughout the Midwest as a quarrymanager, performance manager, and general manager. As vice president, Pat constantly strives to achieve world-class results with our customers. In the community, Pat is a volunteer for Junior Achievement. He also serves on the steering committee for the Andover Public Schools STEM curriculum. Outside the office, Pat enjoys spending time on the golf course or fly-fishing in Missouri. TIMZYNDA, VICE PRESIDENTOFREADYMIXANDASPHALT Tim holds a dual degree in chemical engineering and chemistry from the State University of New York. Prior to joining Cornejo, Tim spent 15 years working in various roles, including inspector for the New York DOT and general manager for Lafarge New Mexico Ready Mix and Lafarge Wichita Ready Mix. Customer service and operational excellence are Tim’s top priorities and are seen in every delivery, every time. In the community, Tim serves on multiple boards throughout Kansas to help the community and his profession. These include the Kansas Food Bank Board of Directors, Cosmopolitan International (Wichita Chapter), and the Kansas Aggregate Producers’ Association/Kansas Ready Mixed Concrete Association. Beyond the office, Tim enjoys spending time coaching his son’s youth baseball team. This is just a small portion of our leadership team, but don’t worry! Heat Up the Summer MonthsWith a ‘Wow!’ CUSTOMER APPRECIATION ISN’T SEASONAL A little customer appreciation can go a long way — after all, everyone likes to be treated well by the people they do business with. But if your appreciation stops at holiday cards and birthday offers, you might be missing the mark. Summers tend to be busy for most whether it’s on the job site or baseball field, so taking the time to show your customers you care during this time can go a long way. HOSTA SUMMER EVENT There’s no need to plan a black-tie gala. Summer is the season of relaxation, so keep it low-key, and let your clients know they are welcome to bring their friends and family. Here are a few fun ideas to consider: • Host a barbecue at the office or local park. Make sure you have the proper permits first. • Book a movie theater, and show the latest blockbuster. (We hear “Avengers: InfinityWar” is pretty awesome.) • Plan an adults-only scavenger hunt. Include local landmarks, offer prizes, and provide grown-up beverages afterward to make the event really memorable. • Throw a block party. This one requires some planning, but if you pull it off, your clients will talk about it until next summer! DELIVER ONE BIG ‘WOW’ Social media makes it pretty easy to keep up with everyone’s lives, so look for an opportunity to make a great impression on one customer. Maybe a client is expecting their first grandchild. Could they use a new stroller? Is a wedding anniversary coming up? Who wouldn’t love a limo ride and dinner at the nicest restaurant in the city? Go a bit over the top! People love to share stories on social media about the cool, unexpected things businesses do. Wouldn’t you like to go viral for a good reason? SEND CARDS FOR STRANGE HOLIDAYS Sure, you mail cards during the winter holidays, but so does everyone else. Why not mail a card for National Doughnut Day on June 1? You can even include a coupon to a local doughnut shop. Or you can send a funny card with a picture of your office dog for National Mutt Day to announce that, thanks to your client’s support, your company is donating to a local animal shelter.

These ideas may work great for your clients, or you might need to brainstorm a bit. Your clients are as unique as your company, so don’t hesitate to find a special way to show them you care.



and employees can work together to conduct safety equipment inspections, develop rescue plans, or discuss job-specific hazards. Safety throughout a construction site is important and should never be taken for granted. One careless action can have catastrophic consequences. Whether it’s during Safety Stand-Down or not, don’t shy away from spreading safety awareness today.

Employers and employees must confer openly with one another to minimize risk. To encourage construction companies to keep those lines of communication wide open, OSHA is promoting an event called the National Safety Stand-Down, which will be held from May 7–11. Safety Stand-Down will spread awareness of safety, particularly regarding falls from heights. “Falls consistently account for the greatest number of fatalities within the construction industry,” OSHA states. “370 of the 991 construction fatalities recorded in 2016 ... [were] caused by falls.” Any individual or company that wants to prevent these and other hazards within the workplace is welcome to participate in Safety Stand-Down. It’s easy to organize, too. Take some time out of the day to gather workers and employers in order to discuss safety. Or try a more hands-on approach. Employers

Everyone knows the basics of construction safety, such as wearing a helmet and goggles or lifting heavy boxes using your legs rather than your back. Unfortunately, construction sites can be dangerous even if you observe all the rules and sit through all the training videos. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), “Nearly 6.5 million people work at approximately 252,000 construction sites across the nation on any given day. The fatal injury rate for the construction industry is higher than the national average in this category for all industries.” Safety should be the No. 1 priority when working in construction. The lives of on-site workers can be at serious risk otherwise. Having little to no chance of injury, whether minor or fatal, ought to be the ultimate goal of all construction companies.




2 large Vidalia onions, peeled, cut in half, and thinly sliced

4 strips bacon

4 hamburger patties

2 tablespoons olive oil

8 thick slices American cheese

2 tablespoons reserved bacon fat

¼ cup whiskey

4 hamburger buns

3 garlic cloves, chopped

1 tsp salt


4. Grill burgers over medium-high heat until cooked to desired doneness. 5. Add two slices of cheese to each burger in the last minute of grilling. 6. Put hamburgers on buns, then top with a large spoonful of caramelized onions and bacon.

1. Cook bacon until crisp. Remove and cool. Reserve 2 tablespoons bacon fat. 2. In a large skillet, combine olive oil and bacon fat, then add onions. Cook over low heat. Add salt and turn onions often for 30–40 minutes until caramelized. 3. Place whiskey and chopped garlic in a shallow dish and add hamburger patties. Marinate for 15 minutes, then flip and marinate another 15 minutes.
