A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Year 12 students back following the Easter holidays. I hope they all managed to get some rest.

Last week, Year 12 students attended timetabled lessons before getting ready to sit their mock exams this week. I was really impressed with their attendance and attitude so far to this week’s mock exams. These exams will conclude on Thursday 4 May, and on Friday 5 May their timetabled lessons will resume.

Year 12 students also took part in the annual UCAS Discovery exhibition on Thursday 20 April. This event brought together the experts to help the students shortlist their options, all under one roof. During this event, the students met representatives from over 100 Universities. They also had the chance to gather lots of information regarding al- ternative post-18 pathways such as apprenticeships. The students thoroughly enjoyed it and found the visit extremely valuable. There will be further support for all students for all potential post-18 pathways during the summer term.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway For Whom the Bell Tolls follows Robert Jordan, an American soldier who goes abroad to fight on the side of freedom in a war with no true heroes. Deployed to blow up a bridge in the Spanish Sierra, Jordan begins to question whether he is fighting for the right people, or if such people even exist. Produced close to the exact midpoint of his career, For Whom the Bell Tolls represents the work of a master in his prime. Operating on many different levels, the book provides an accurate and harrowing description of the Spanish Civil War, a deep and intimate view into the lives of rebels, and a fast-moving, engrossing narrative. Despite the heavy subject matter, a simple and laconic writing style allows for the reader to move swiftly along without much interruption for long and gratuitous descriptions or introspection. In a sentence or two, a picture is painted of the Spanish countryside, and the men who fight for its freedom, and its destruction. With a low barrier for entry, and so much to gain, For Whom the Bell Tolls is a worthwhile read for anyone. ~Recommended by Zach R, Year 12 student Please contact us with any queries or problems you may have.
