Since returning from the Easter break staff and students have really thrown themselves back into school life. There have been a number of trips out of school. Some of our Year 10 students went to the World of Work Conference organised by the Worshipful Company of World Traders. Our Year 12 students attended the UCAS Conference as they now start thinking about their choices once they finish their A levels.

Some of our Year 8 students had the opportunity to visit Roehampton University as part of their Teen Tech competition. We have been just as busy in school with students in Year 7 and 8 taking part in the UK Junior Maths Challenge. We also welcomed the Quirky Bird Theatre Company into school to perform for our Year 10 Drama students. GCSE and A level exams have now started for our students in Years 11 and 13. The GCSE Language speaking exams took place in the last fortnight, with the A level exams scheduled for next week. GCSE Art students have also completed their exams producing fantastic pieces exploring this year’s exam theme, ‘Lock’. Our Photography A level students have completed their exams today. Year 12 students are also currently sitting their internal exams. Finally I would like to thank our amazing PTA for the beautiful new ovens that we installed in Food Technology last week. Click here to see some images of the ovens in use . This will benefit students across the school and we all look forward to tasting the wonderful culinary delights that they now create. This generous donation would not be possible without the support of the parent community, not only through attending events run by the PTA but also through regular donations through the kindlink.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

If it seems that every time you check your newsfeed there is an alarmist article on a new peril parents must manage as they help their children steer the course through childhood to adolescence, it is most likely because that is the world we live in now. Continuous and contradictory news blasts seem designed to keep us in a state of “red alert,” or may cause us to feel guilty that we are not doing enough to protect our children from this changing world that is not the one in which we grew up, and—perhaps worse—is not one we recognize. What is a conscientious parent to do? For starters, we should not be made to feel helpless by the onslaught. The better approach? Being aware and proactive. That is the message in this week's On Educating Girls podcast from the International Coalition of Girls' Schools. Liz Joyce, a clinical social worker and school counsellor at Nashoba Brooks School talks about how parents can support their children in 'Parenting Girls in a Changing World' Previous episodes of the podcast focus on themes including: Girls who Embrace Their Introvertedness, Developing Leadership and Self-esteem in Girls, and Girls as Happy, Healthy Individuals.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

It has been a very busy week for Year 10. On Wednesday we held PCM appointments and it has been lovely to hear positive feedback about the progress Year 10 are making. On Tuesday students attended the World of Work Conference whilst GCSE Drama students not only started to undertake their Composition 1 tech and dress rehearsals over the past 2 weeks, but also watched a performance of one of their core texts, The IT. More information regarding both events can be found further below. The U16 Basketball Squad played their league final against Grey Court on Wednesday last week. They faced very tough opposition as always when playing Grey Court and were under a lot of pressure in defence. The team kept a positive approach and started to link passes and put shots up and score baskets. The final score was 18-44 to Grey Court and this result meant that Waldegrave finished runners up in the league. Well done to everyone who played, and Roya for being voted player of the match. Congratulations to Elodie S in 10SAS for achieving a Merit in her Grade 7 ABRSM Violin exam! Our top 3 epraise tutor groups since returning to school this term are; 1st 10FBA - 50 points, 2nd 10PON - 47 points and 3rd 10SAS - 43 points. Last week myself, Mr Sweeney and Ms Dhir had the very difficult job of shortlisting the applications for House Captains. We would like to commend all applicants for the high quality of the letters they submitted. The 24 successful candidates will carry out group and individual tasks as part of the next stage of the House Captain process on Friday after school. Good luck to all students involved. We will be finalising the Prefect application process and notifying students about the role they have been successful in achieving over the coming few days. Once again, well done to all those who have applied as the standard of applications was extremely high.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

He Said / She Said by Erin Kelly “The betrayal flayed my skin, but his cowardice chips the bone. It poisons the marrow.”

Laura thought herself the hero when she saved a young woman from a brutal attack. This would go on to change her life in ways that no one could have predicted. Now she and her boyfriend Kit live constantly in fear, tiptoeing around society, trying to remain as invisible and off the radar as possible. However Laura knows that something is hidden, she is never quite seeing the whole picture of the story. This gripping thriller leads to crazy character developments and

horrifying revelations up till the very last page. ~Recommended by Miranda H, Year 9 student

WORLD OF WORK CONFERENCE This week, a group of Year 10 students, accompanied by Mrs Dhir and Mr Parker, had the opportunity to attend the “World of Work” conference, organised by the Worshipful Company of World Traders. The main objective of the conference was to familiarise students with the importance of soft skills and how they can be beneficial in both personal and professional lives. The conference consisted of a variety of workshops that focused on different aspects of communication, questioning techniques, and diversity. In addition, there was a panel event where previous attendees shared their experiences and offered advice on how to make the most of their education. The conference was a fantastic way to introduce our students to the skills and strategies needed to achieve their future goals. Our students gained valuable insight into how they can prepare themselves for success in the years ahead.

DRAMA PERFORMANCE BY THE QUIRKY BIRD THEATRE COMPANY

On Tuesday Quirky Bird Theatre Company came to show Year 10 ' The IT ', a show that is a set text for GCSE Drama. Students said the play was important in raising awareness of mental health in young people as the play is about all the stresses on a teenager’s life and how they can cause anxiety. The piece is very current and addresses issues facing society today such as racism and food banks. Some students commented that it was nice to see the play as it makes them feel less alone with their anxieties and traumas.
