About this image: Prior to Ultrasound, the K-40 counter was adapted for Beef Cattle evaluation purposes. It measured Potassium-40, a naturally occurring radioactive isotope of potassium, to estimate lean body mass of live cattle. Oklahoma State conducted a research project in 1969 to evaluate the measures versus chemical analysis of one-half of the carcass of 40 bulls. The research validated the method and Martin Jorgensen adopted the technology to evaluate carcass merit of bulls in the early 1970s!
