SUMMER 2023
Parks & Recreation Program Guide Swim Lesson Flow Chart Starfish Swimming Canada
Starfish Swimming Canada
Why did the City of Medicine Hat switch swim lesson providers? Red Cross announced in May 2022 that they will no longer be providing swimming lessons as of December 31, 2022. Since May, we have conducted extensive research around the best swim program for our community. What is Starfish Swimming Canada? Starting in January 2023 we will be using Starfish Swimming Canada. This is a new program to Canada and originally based in the United States. Starfish Swimming offers swim lessons all over the world, in over 25 countries. What are the differences and benefits of Starfish Swimming Canada? The biggest difference that you will notice is the switch from numbered lessons to colours. Starfish Swimming Canada continues our commitment to teach swim and water safety skills to children starting at a young age. The skills taught by Starfish Swimming Canada focus more on benchmark evaluations rather than skill proficiency. It is beneficial developmentally for swimmers. We anticipate that we will be able to place more swimmers in lessons (approximately 100 more swimmers per set). Swimmers will have the opportunity to learn and master stroke skills such as elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly. How will parents know what lesson to put their child in? The next few pages have different conversion graphics to help you register for the correct level and lesson. These graphics include a conversion chart based on what lesson swimmers previously took in Red Cross. These are recommendations and we cannot guarantee that a swimmer will be able to complete the required skills. Can a swimmer skip a level in Swim School or Stroke School? The program is designed to complete one lesson at a time in the order recommended by Starfish Swimming Canada. If you are not sure what lesson to register in, please use the conversion charts or call 403-502-8566 to book an assessment.

Adult Swim Basics This is a two-level program that teaches basic swimming skills. Swim Basics is an introduction to swimming with a focus on front swim. The focus is on developing front and back crawl, establishing comfort in deep water, and increasing the swimming distance. These courses are designed to develop or increase swimmers’ comfort in the water through basic flotation, movement, and breathing skills and to foster the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes you need to stay safe in, on, and around the water.
