ABC Opposes Discriminatory, Costly PLA on East Side Fire Station Associated Builders and Contractors Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter (ABC) is outraged about the discrimi- natory union-only Project Labor Agreement (PLA) on the construction of the new East Side Fire Station in Allentown. “Construction projects should be awarded on merit, not labor affiliation,” said Mark McMahon, 2012 ABC Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter chair and Vice President at Delran Builders Company. “By choosing to implement a PLA on its new fire station, the City of Allentown is wasting taxpayers’ money and limiting local job creation.” PLAs discourage or eliminate merit shop contractors from competing for and winning contracts on construction projects. Construction contracts subject to PLAs are almost always awarded exclusively to unionized contractors and their all-union workforces. Learn more about PLAs at TheTruthAboutPLAs.com or abceastpa.org. ABC Members Honored for Safety, Training Achievements More than 70 ABC member companies were honored for their commitment to safety and training at ABC Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter’s annual Member Recognition Awards presentation. The Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program provides an organized approach for analyzing and developing safety and loss prevention programs. Training Education and Management (TEAM) awards assess a company’s educational program in 14 key areas. The full lists of winners are available at abceastpa.org. O’Donnell Named Woman of the Year
Member Awards
Barbara O’Donnell was named the ABC Eastern Pennsylvania Woman of the Year. Barbara has worked for Zebby Sulecki, Inc., for 12 years and serves as the controller. She chairs the ABC chapter’s management education committee and is involved in the HR peer group, office managers peer group, safety committee and Women in Construction. Thank you to Allan A. Myers for sponsoring the Woman of the Year award. Singerling Highlights Importance of Voting Nov. 6 To say a lot hinges on the outcome of the 2012 election is an understatement. In addition to the presidential election there are gubernatorial, U.S. Senate and House seats up for grabs in November, along with a plethora of state and local seats. ABC National’s senior director of political affairs, Chris Singerling, recently presented two sessions on Elections 101. Singerling reviewed the top issues that will influence the outcome of the election and shared action items for ABC members and employees. “The commercial construction industry is not better off than it was four years ago,” Singerling said. “Visit ABCvotes.com to learn where your candidates stand on the issues and important voter deadlines and registration information. Make sure your hard work doesn’t go to waste and vote on Nov. 6.” Judging ABC Member-Built Projects From churches to universities to speed raceways and a roadway plus many structures in between, judges for the 22nd annual Awards of Excellence program evaluated a variety of construction projects built by ABC members. Groups of design professionals, including architects and engineers, traveled throughout eastern Pennsylvania to see and rate the projects. Nearly 40 unique projects were entered this year’s contest program. The results of the judging day will be announced at ABC Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter’s 22nd Annual Awards of Excellence banquet Nov. 28 at the Radisson Valley Forge in King of Prussia. Tickets for the banquet are available by contacting Jean at 302-328-1111 or jtoman@abceastpa.org. Barbara O’Donnell

They’re standing on a concept called merit construction. This means both merit and union craftspeople work side-by-side.
Contractors are chosen on merit, those who offer the best skills get the jobs. Being open to new ideas like multi-skills work teams, new technology and advanced construction techniques, merit contractors are able to
construct high-quality buildings that are highly cost-efficient. Merit contractors bring highly skilled jobs with competitive wages to our community. Today, 4 out of 5 people in construction are employed by merit contractors . If you are planning a construction project, find out more about merit contractors . We don’t just construct better buildings. We build a stronger economy and a better quality of life for this community. MERIT CONTRACTORS. BUILDING A BETTER LIFE.
