All kinds of everything We love Oregon for its natural wonders, and everything in between, which is why one family holiday here is never enough

Fat Biking, Cannon Beach

S aying that Oregon has a little bit of everything isn’t entirely accurate. This is the 10th largest US state - ninth if you count its waterways - so nothing here is ‘little’. Proof of that lies in wonders like Crater Lake - the country’s deepest - or Mt. Hood - second most climbed mountain in the world - or Hells Canyon - North America’s deepest river gorge. But while the ‘little’ part might not be accurate, the ‘everything’ definitely holds true. Aside from nature’s extreme generosity, Oregon can also take credit for the iconic city of Portland, as well as cultural hotspots like Jacksonville and Ashland. And you’d certainly need more than one holiday in Southern Oregon to fully appreciate the many and varied Umpqua and Rogue Valley wineries. If you’re in a road trip mood, welcome to the land of Scenic Byways, where kids are too busy gazing out of the window to ask, ‘are we there yet?’.

Although you might find yourself detouring or stopping longer than planned: irresistible attractions are another big Oregon talent. Obviously with so much space, it’s heaven for outdoorsy kids whether their tastes run to ziplines or kayaking, the fun of fat biking on beaches or they’re more up for stargazing under some of the darkest Dark Skies on earth. Then there’s the Oregon Coast. Did we leave the best till last? Not a bit of it; as you’ll discover, all of Oregon is worth exploring. But from the city of Astoria in the north to southerly Brookings, the coast is stunning and lined with remarkable beaches where you’ll find quiet space, even in summer. You might also like to know that, from November to June each year, 1000s of grey whales migrate along this very coast, and the best place to spot them with kids is between Depoe Bay and Newport: just one more of the many unforgettable ‘only in Oregon’ experiences.
