Dr. Hoffman: If I understand what you said correctly, it's really about managing expectation along with the education. Not only do you need to educate the parent at the very beginning which is why they're bringing that child in, but you have to reinforce that over time as well. That's good. What about parents that ask about maybe coming to see their newborn child for you to go and either be part of their birth, or see their child, or even go into a hospital? Have you experienced that question or maybe even had that situation come up? Dr. Apfelblat: Yes, absolutely. That happens quite often. I think that ... First of all, I think it's very risky. I think when we hear chiropractors who do this, perhaps it was their sister, or their cousin, or a friend, or a good family member, their wife. My concern would be that if there were any medical complication that would occur, if you didn't have express written consent from the hospital giving you permission to be there ... One of my chiropractic dreams is that at birth that you could elect or request to have a chiropractic evaluation by a chiropractor in the hospital at birth, but that isn't the case. That's not the policy right now. If you were to be there and you were to adjust an infant and any medical complication arose while that infant was in the hospital, the newborn, not only could you be at risk for suit from the parents, but also from allegations from the hospital. My policy is that I like to be the first stop on the way home from the hospital. I invite them to come right on the way home. To me, I think it's such an honor that they bring their baby into our home, into their chiropractic home before they even go to their actual homes. Dr. Hoffman: That's why we had you on today because that is ... You just did my job for me. This is something that I discuss a lot because the doctors that we know out there have a lot of different, I believe, misconceptions over this whole concept of going out and taking care of the pregnant mother and the newborn child. One of the things that I find as a big, big issue you brought up about the hospital and having permission and, yes, that can be a big problem for so many reasons based on ... Even if the hospital just simply found you there and reported to your licensing board she was here or whatever, that's misconduct based on most licensing board just that alone. We don't want to have doctors in that situation. Also, we have a lot of doctors that go to home births. What my concern is that I think it's great to absolutely check that pregnant mother all
