Our Veterans Deserve More Than ‘Gratitude’ GRATITUDE? THEY HEAR THAT B.S. EVERY DAY
ll year long, you hardly hear a peep about our veterans from corporations. And yet, every November, so many

companies jump on the “gratitude” train for our veterans. Restaurants give veterans free pancakes and retail stores announce “exciting” new discounts for veterans. My question is this: where’s this support when it doesn’t come with a PR campaign? Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful that we live in a great country. It’s a place that presents opportunities to people who have been here for generations and those who have just arrived. But I’d be lying if I said that we live in a perfectly fair and equitable nation, even if I truly believe it’s the greatest in the world. The burdens in our society aren’t equally shared. Some people have to make heavier sacrifices than others. “I can’t speak for all veterans, but I can tell you most of them don’t need free pancakes and discounts. They don’t need your gratitude. They hear that B.S. everyday.” When I was growing up in the ‘60s, there was a lot of unrest surrounding the Vietnam War. During that time — and it’s not all that different today — the most privileged members of our society weren’t asked to join the war effort the same way regular folks were. My mom grew up with 12 siblings, and her parents didn’t have much. In short order, three of her brothers were on their way overseas to fight for their country.
First was Uncle Bill, who was drafted into the Army. Then, Uncle Wayne was drafted into the Army Infantry, even with his two-year degree in hand. Uncle Dale must’ve seen the writing on the wall, because he didn’t wait to get drafted. He enlisted and joined his brothers in the Army. I guess you could say it’s become a family tradition, because both my son and I have served in the Armed Forces. I served in the Army Infantry and my son served in the Marine Corps (sometimes generating a bit of inter-service rivalry!) I can’t speak for all veterans, but I can tell you most of them don’t need free pancakes and discounts. They don’t need your gratitude. They hear that B.S. everyday. These are people that had to dig a hole to sleep in at times, but they are raised and trained to persevere. They are, in short, an inspiration. Our veterans are one of the most optimistic groups of people you will ever meet. They deserve more! Despite the burden they’ve shouldered for every member of our nation, I can’t help but get a little angry at the hoops they have to jump through when they get back to America. If a veteran ends
up in a motor vehicle accident, you can bet the insurance company will dig up an incident that happened years before. It wasn’t until last year that the VA got digital medical records. Can you believe that? We can literally take a picture and send it to China in a few seconds. It would take weeks for the VA to mail medical records via UPS. Wouldn’t you call that backwards? I know that nearly every single person that works in VA has the best of intentions. It’s not their fault. It’s the system that lets our veterans down. And because they are people with near- superhuman amounts of perseverance, veterans often put up with this for too long. It shouldn’t be this way. Think about it … how long did it take a young man to receive their draft letter for the Vietnam War vs. how long it takes a veteran to receive their benefits? You’ve taken on a duty that protects everyone in our nation, whether they know it or not. For that and for everything else you do, let me say, personally, thank you. But, more than that, you have my support when the system lets you down. –Wade Coye

3 Family Activities for Thanksgiving
Grab some colored paper circles — or cut them out — and have your children write down things that they are thankful for. A silver Sharpie is great for this. Punch holes in the tops of the circles and run string through them. Tie the other end of the string to a coat hanger or embroidery hoop and hang it from the ceiling. Stuff the Turkey Game Want to get the kids outside so you can get to work in the kitchen? Create a Thanksgiving-themed game for them to play outside while you prep the stuffing and put the turkey in the oven. To create a holiday-themed “Stuff the Turkey” game, all you need is a few paper bags. We’ll bet you have some left over from shopping. Use two small bags stuffed with scrap paper to create legs and glue them to a larger bag folded to look like the body of a turkey. Now that you have your turkey, you need some balls to stuff it with. Anything soft and baseball-sized will work, even some balled-up paper. Kids will take turns trying to toss the balls into the turkey, scoring points for every shot made.
Unless you have a child auditioning for “MasterChef Junior,” you’re probably not going to let the little ones cook the turkey this Thanksgiving. Just because the kitchen might be off limits, though, doesn’t mean you can’t find a few creative ways to make the holiday extra special for your kids. Spice up Thanksgiving with these fun, family-friendly activities. Coloring-Book Tablecloths If you have a big family, you are probably familiar with the Thanksgiving tradition of the kids’ table. It may be smaller than the grown-ups’ seating arrangement, but it doesn’t have to be any less special. Turn your kids’ table into a canvas for a colorful, creative dining experience. To do this, use craft or art paper to cover the table. Tape everything down tightly and provide crayons and colored pencils for every place setting. If you want to add some extra holiday spirit, put the drawing supplies in empty cranberry sauce and pumpkin cans. Gratitude Mobiles Of course, Thanksgiving isn’t just about delicious food. Teaching kids about gratitude is the most valuable Thanksgiving lesson. Bring that concept to life with a gratitude mobile.

That Actually Work
Detergent Pods You use too much soap in your washing machine and dishwasher. At least, that’s what the New York Times reported as the No. 1 complaint from repair people and appliance experts. Modern appliances are designed to use less water, and as soap becomes more concentrated, using too much can damage your machine. That’s what makes detergent pods so handy. They don’t look like they can clean all your dishes or an entire load of clothes, but they actually provide the perfect amount for modern machines. You save money on detergent and machine repair! Foam Cleaning Blocks Anything with “magic” in the title sounds like a scam. For this reason, you may have avoided the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and similar melamine foam products. But this is one case where the product lives up to its wild
claims. Melamine foam is abrasive and can break down and remove material from fine cracks and textures, making it an effective cleaner. It can be used to whiten sneakers, clean tub scum, and remove permanent marker from your fridge. Since the snake oil salesmen in the days of old first tricked trusting folks out of their hard-earned cash, consumers have wised up and are quick to write off perceived scams. Still, every now then you get lucky, and the cheap white sponge really does make the stove look like new. But you should still think twice before you say yes to gas station sushi.
If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But sometimes we stumble across a few hidden gems that make our lives easier. And, when it comes to cleaning house, we can all use a little “easier.” Check out these products you may have already written off and let them surprise you. Dollar Store Cleaning Products If you’ve ever ducked into the local dollar store to buy some Mylar balloons for your niece’s birthday party, you might have noticed the jugs and spray bottles plastered with the word “Awesome.” Surely, this knock-off soap can’t work as well as your brand- name products, right? You’d be surprised. Online reviewers sing Awesome’s praises, suggesting it should really be a higher price for how well it works. Just make sure you wear gloves when you use it.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH SAUSAGE Looking for an easy, delicious Thanksgiving side dish? This gem requires only a few ingredients.
Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil
• • •
1½ pounds Brussels sprouts
3.3 ounces fresh, hot Italian sausage
½ cup water
Salt and pepper
Directions
1. Trim sprouts and cut in half. 2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and cook, stirring occasionally, 3–5 minutes. 3. Add sprouts to skillet. Add ½ cup water. Add salt and pepper. Cover and cook 10 minutes or until just tender. Check them periodically and add a bit more water, if necessary.
4. When sprouts are just about done, remove cover and raise heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring just once or twice, for a couple more minutes. The liquid should evaporate, and the sprouts should start to brown. 5. Add more salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot or warm. Recipe courtesy of CookingLight.com.

JINGLE EVE Parades, Dinner, and
If you want to end the day without kitchen cleanup, there are some great options for dining out. Mitchell’s Fish Market , Emeril’s Orlando , and Park Plaza Gardens are all making fantastic Thanksgiving menus for guests and their families to enjoy, without the headache of cooking and the nightmare of boxing up all those leftovers. Treat yourself this Thanksgiving with a night of all play and no work. But be sure to make reservations well in advance, because a lot of people will want to do the same thing.
Orlando comes alive this month as the holiday season kicks off. Be sure to check out some of the events we’ve picked from this month’s local events calendar! Jingle Eve is happening again this year at Gaston Edwards Park on Nov. 19, and you don’t want to miss it. Starting at 5 p.m., this family-friendly event features Santa’s Village, a wine stroll, a cozy beer garden, as well as live music and local vendors and artists. And be sure to stick around for the tree lighting ceremony! This classic event is beloved by many in our town, and it’s a great place to go with family and friends.
The Universal Holiday Parade on Nov. 23 has all the floats and fun of the old Macy’s parade, but with many more floats and characters joining the festivities. Head to the Studios to check it out, and be sure to bring the kids. Santa Claus and the Rockettes — decked out in festive attire, of course — will also be present for pictures, and there’s a tree lighting ceremony (in case you missed Jingle Eve!). We think it rivals the Macy’s parade in New York City, but come down and judge for yourself!
