PUBLISHER’S NOTE SARAH NATHAN

In producing this issue, I found myself to be really present pre and during Hellobali’s Art and Culture 2019 issue, where I oversaw our cover story with the impeccable Balinese and Bali based public figures (page 37). After we finished finalising the cover story, as I drove back home from the office and the sight of Bali’s chaotic yet alluring streets caught my eye, I couldn’t help but overcome with emotion when I realised Balinese culture is a wonderful heritage worth preserving and thankfully, there are those amazing men and women in Indonesia who uses their influence and talent for this noble purposes. I was sure to truly appreciate the gift of this job and travel. It allows me to meet all the remarkable local influential public figure, taking in every precious moment, and I encourage you to do the same. For this issue, Hellobali talks about Art & Culture from four different perspective, industry, and profession (page 37). Upon further reflection, this cover story is now my favorite we’ve ever done so far (and yes, I do say that every issue!). This Issue, Hellobali had the privilege to talk with the most notable compassionate artist, entrepreneur & actress in-and-out, Happy Salma, the prominent Indonesian actor Oka Antara, Bali’s extraordinaire sculptor Nyoman Nuarta, the environmental stalwart musician I Gede Robi Supriyanto (Navicula), the influential Ida Bagus Rai Budiarsa owner of Bali’s finest wines - Hatten Wines and the inspiring talented architect with penchant for preserving Balinese contemporary art, Koman Wahyu Suteja founder of Komaneka Resorts. We hope this article helps to inspire you as it certainly did for us. In this issue, contributing avid photographer traveller Tatiana Kotova pursue of passion brings her across the continent. Only for this issue under our elsewhere section, Kotova walk us through interesting aspects of her life and career; including her moment with FNPF Foundation in Bali, Indonesia (page 76). Furthermore, if you’re looking for inspiration this month, look no further than the inspiring one of Indonesia’s eminent actor, Raymond Tungka. Exclusively for Hellobali, Tungka shares the beauty of his travels and journey in conserving the forest throughout this interview (page 70). Next year, we’ll be looking at ways to enhance your reading experience with a complete website overhaul. But I’d really love to know what you’d like to see more or less of so that we can ensure we meet your needs. We care about what you think. As always, I hope you enjoy the issue and please do feel free to get in touch with me personally at publisher@hellobali.id. Thank you!

H ellobali Magazine is currently in its 5th Bi- monthly issue and as a bi-monthly digital and print publication, it’s only natural that a change in season is considered when I sit down to write this publisher’s letter every two months. In the past one month, my team has never worked so hard and on so many exceptional projects. It was one of the biggest highlights of September month, without a doubt meeting new faces – our beloved readers & communities. After months of planning, we hosted the event for Bali’s first and biggest beauty destination, Estee Lauder Company Indonesia launched its first multi-brand store in Bali. Up next, we hosted for Bonheur Bali under Masari Group ‘Beauty O’Clock’ ; an intimate gathering for guests to discover new and existing beauty and fashion brands available at Bonheur Bali store. Last but not least, we hosted the phenomenal grand launching Conrad’s new wedding preparation suites Infinitales event featuring the talented humbling Indonesia’s fashion designer Hian Tjen. With the much-valued support of all our event sponsor & partners we were able to make every event exceeds our expectation– whilst sipping on Bali’s very own finest Hatten Wine, of course.

COVER STORY INSPIRATION 39

A compassionate artist in-and-out, Happy Salma is a shining gem in her generation of Indonesia’s TV and movie performer. Now a full-time Bali residence, the beautiful wife and mother of two continually pursue her passion in the world of arts through her relentless zeal, talent and energy. There were times where Happy Salma was considered as one of Indonesia’s best actresses who grazed both the silver screen and television alike with her natural beauty and top-notch acting talent, but then she decided to left the extravagant celebrity life in Jakarta behind and resides in the tranquility of Bali after getting married with a prince from Ubud royal family. Nowadays, she is putting all effort and focuses on the world of art through her own jewelry label, Tulola, and recently appointed as the Art Advisor of Apurva Kempinski. Here goes her story… Born in Sukabumi, West Java, Happy Salma Wanasari was an avid reader and writer from her tender age. Blessed by gorgeous physical appearance, she naturally started her career in Indonesia’s entertainment industry as a model before successfully pursuing her acting career on screen. Unlike most other celebrity who uses ‘stage moniker’, Happy Salma decides to stick to her unique namesake. “Yes, ‘Happy’ is my real name” she gleefully answered. “When my mom was pregnant, she has another best friend who’s also expecting, but then having a miscarriage. My mom was so happy that I could born safely, hence the name” Starting her career in Jakarta, Happy then decide to move to Bali after marrying a photographer, Tjokorda Bagus Dwi Santana Kertayasa, who’s happen to be a member of Ubud’s royal family (hence the ‘Jero’ official honorary title in front of her name). Now, she already found the balance between the metropolis and island life, and seemingly able to still do her career in both regions, despite of its distance and difference. “In Jakarta, everything is super-fast and busy. It is a place where I can execute my ideas; whether to make a show or me as an actress. Bali is a place where I can distance myself with those bustling routine. In this island, I can arrange my plan, hatch ideas and think about what I want to do in clarity” Happy explains. “Bali is a place to discover the source of my inspiration. But I also need Jakarta to grow my awareness about that ‘tranquil space’ itself. Bali and Jakarta gives me balance, but of course now Bali has become a home for me and my little family. So, for living, I feel more contempt to reside in this island” As a national celebrity, Happy’s deep attention to contemporary art; both handicraft and literature makes her a ‘rare-breed’ amongst her colleagues. That’s why when Apurva Kempinski Bali approached her to become their ‘Art Advisor’,

“My love for and culture are mostly interpreted through adaptation of Indonesian literature to performing arts, fore fronting Indonesian spirit collaboration with lots of art performers. This energy is what drives me to give input to all kind of art-related aspect in Apurva” of ‘gotong royong’ (strive in togetherness) and also

island’s incredible culture, art and also the artists, and she shares about some names she particularly admire, including Desak Nyoman Suarti, which inspires her to establish Tulola jewelry brand. “In 2010, I was writing a creative biography about Desak Nyoman Suarti, and that makes me get to know more about her through her daughter, Dewa Sri. She was the one curating late Desak Suarti’s personal possession for my writing material” Happy said. “That pleasant meeting turns into business collaboration. I made creative concept and branding, while Dewa Sri creates the designs. Tulola brand itself has actually existed since few years back before then, when Sri only made jewelry for other brands and her closest friends” “I don’t want Tulola to become just another jewelry brand. There has to be a strong concept within it as well. My deep love and passion to literature and Indonesia’s indigenous aspect; both its history and human, become the basic of Tulola’s creativity” Happy said. Now a mom of two, Happy also spill some beans about her up and coming project, which will see her back on the stage as a performer once again. “I will be involved in a movie which will start shooting around the end of this year. I am so excited in this project, because usually I prefer to stay behind the scene as producer so I can have more time flexibility with my children. I also will produce the 32th show by Titimangsa; my own culture foundation. Then, I will also step up to the stage once more to do monolog” she excitedly explains.

she didn’t think twice to accept the role. “I really appreciate Apurva’s maximum effort to give space for artists to shine; whether sculptor, architect, interior designer or even local craftsmen. This was proven by the hotel itself, which was designed and adorned by talented Indonesian artists” Happy stated. “My love for and culture are mostly interpreted through adaptation of Indonesian literature to performing arts, fore fronting Indonesian spirit of ‘gotong royong’ (strive in togetherness) and also collaboration with lots of art performers. This energy is what drives me to give input to all kind of art-related aspect in Apurva” she said. “My involvement with Apurva is also in-tune with my effort to give Balinese culture a room to breathe and live. Bali is a symbol of Indonesian harmony in the eye of the world, therefore, we who live in it should always introspect ourselves when things are falling out of places” Living in Bali for over a decade has opens up Happy’s knowledge and understanding about the

INSPIRATION COVER STORY

Oka Antara is a well known Indonesian actor, he had won at least four awards including Best Supporting Actor for his movie The Crescent Moon. Born a Balinese, he lived in New York in his younger years, and came back to Indonesia to pursue a music career. He did release a Hip Hop/ R&B album that opened up his road to host MTV Jamz. Not too long after that he started to do acting, and fell in love with it to this day. He now stars in movies like Killers, Foxtrot Six as well as Brata, a crime thriller web series to name a few. We would love to catch up with how he is today, so we met him for an up close and personal talk.

A BALINESE ACTOR WE LOVE

As a Balinese descent, do you remember any stories or experience about your area (Karang Asem)? The only distinct memory I had was that every time my family and I went to Bali, we weren’t allowed to stay in the city. We had to go straight to our village from the moment we landed at the airport. And man.. the road to my village was painful. There were no bypass back then, so the trip consists of a 4-5 hour drive non stop in a cramped up mini van. Just when you thought you got through the long hour drive, the car had to stop at the very end of the asphalt concrete road. So we had to reach the village by walking a few kilometers further. But this was in the 80’s. Ever since they built a bypass that cuts through the mountain and saved 3 hour, coming home is always something I look forward to.

Being born in Jakarta, and grew up in New York, did your parents ever teach you about Balinese cultures? No. But they did sent me to sunday school in which I learned the basic teachings of Hinduism. If yes, what do you think is the most crucial thing (could be a religious view, history, culture, etc.) that you still hold dear to this day? That there is only one God. I know it’s nothing for any other religion to believe in this. But as a Hindu, I often get exposed to alot of different Hindu teachings that offers many deities. For example, Hindus in India never heard of Sang Hyang Widhi. That term is only believed by a Hindu sect in Bali called Hindu Dharma. We believe God as the one and only. That’s what I believe in.

How proud are you, being a Balinese male who became one of the best actors in Indonesia? I am super proud to represent the place where I come from. How did you break free from the stereotype that Balinese don’t leave the island? My dad has never let any of his children live in Bali. So technically I have never left Bali if i have never lived there. Hehe. But I thought about living in Bali once I’m done with the industry. What’s your favourite staycation place in Bali? Definitely my home in Karangasem, now that we have a shortcut to get there. My house in Renon, also Ubud area, mainly because they have beautiful hotels and restaurants there.

COVER STORY INSPIRATION 41

Do you think it is important to bring Balinese culture more into movies? Absolutely. How else are we going to introduce Balinese culture to millennials? Movie is a fun way to introduce things - in this case, culture - to the younger generation. How do you want people to think, feel and experience Balinese culture? That it’s peaceful, people of Bali are very forgiving and easily forgets the bad that had happened and chose to carry on. Bali bombing for example. I don’t think Bali millenials are aware of such tragic event ever happened. Not that they dont care but what had happen happened. No one is trying to instill fear or hatred toward others. Do you teach your kids about their Balinese heritage? Not yet. They’re still too young to care. But all in due time. Sometimes people feel like they’re stuck or bored doing what they’ve been doing for so long. Did this ever happen to you? How did you overcome that? Happens to me all the time. I always take a break every time it happens. Try to reconnect to other aspects in life which has nothing to do with the industry such as spending time with my family, hobbies and God. How do you maintain a good reputation and image in the entertainment industry? To be honest I don’t know haha. I just focus on performing, behaving professionally, respecting other co workers. I believe if you laser focus on one thing and one thing only, you will never go astray. And that itself already built a good reputation for you. Do you still have dreams that you want to make come true? I want to give back to the community more. It will be great to give back so other people can also feel joy. What keeps you busy lately? Any series, new series or upcoming movies? I’m doing a drama movie based on a novel to be shot in early September, and a crime thriller series in November to December. It’s called Brata, the first season is already available through an application online. Many people admire and look up to you, what’s your number 1 life hacks that you can share to the readers? Everybody can be successful. But make sure to distinguish yourself by being successful yet a positive influence for the younger generations.
