October 11— “He opened not his mouth”. (Isa. 53:7). How much grace it requires to bear a misunderstanding rightly, and to receive an unkind judgment in holy sweetness! Nothing tests the Christian’s character more than to have some evil thing said about him. This is the file that soon proves whether we are electroplate or solid gold. If we could only know the blessings that lie hidden in our trials we would say like David, when Shimei cursed him, “Let him curse; . . . it may be . . . that the Lord will requite me good for his cursing this day.” Some people get easily turned aside from the grandeur of their life- work by pursuing their own grievances and enemies, until their life gets turned into one little petty whirl of warfare. God give us more o f His Spirit, “who, when he was reviled, reviled not a g a i n b u t “committed himself to him that judgeth righteously.” “ Consider him that endur- eth such contradiction of sinners against himself.”— A. B. Simpson. — o — October 12— “ The cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it" (John 18:11)? Had we been left to our unaided rea sonings we might have supposed that the most bitter ingredients of His cup had been supplied by the ingratitude of His own, the implacable rancor of the priests, and the treachery of Judas. But, see, He recognized none but the Father—it is al ways the Father, always the cup which the Father had given. What God permits is as equally His will as what He appoints. Joseph told his brethren that it was not they who sent him to Egypt, but God. David listened meekly to Shimei’s shame ful words, because he felt that God allow ed them to be spoken. And! here Jesus re fused to see the hand of His foes in His sufferings, but passed beyond the hand which bore the cup to His lips, to the Fa ther who was permitting it to be so pre sented. O sufferer, whether by those strokes which seem to come direct from heaven, or by those which, like malicious speeches or oppressive acts seem to ema nate from man, look up into the face of God, and say, “My Father, this is Thy will for me. Thine angels could have deliv ered me had it been best. But since they have not interposed, I read Thy choice for Thy child, and I am satisfied. It is sweet to drink the. cup which Thy hands have prepared.”— Love to the Uttermost. God’s love is deeper than human sor row. God’s love is deeper than death. Up on my meeting a friend whom I had not seen for some time, he said, “ Since we last met, I have dug a deep grave.” But the grave-digger’s spade cannot get be neath our Father’s love. God’ s love is deeper than the deepest grave you ever dug, and you can never dig into any dreary dwelling o f death which is beyond the reach of the white robed messengers of eternal love. “ O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” Drop your plummet into the deepest sea o f sorrow, and at the end of all your soundings, “ underneath are the everlast ing arms.”—/. H. Jowett. October 13—“ For I am the Lord, I change not” (Mai. 3:6).

"I prefer American Bible S ociety bonds b efore many others, first and fore* most because they are an investment for eternity.” "My wife and I are pleased that our gift w ill ulti mately aid a great mission ary agency. We like your promptness in remittance.” ❖ "The satisfaction that I can help to aid the Gospel message and that the work will continue perhaps long after I have gone gives me pleasure.” "One attractive feature of your annuity bond agree ment is that 'it pays a good substantial income to the Annuitant as long as he l i v e s ; and pays it promptly.” "The thing most gratifying to me is the knowledge that after I am gone my money w ill still be at work. That is, it means permanency of Gospel Proclamation.|* "I am now past seventy- one, and have money in vested in other ways that give me trouble and anx iety; but the income from your annuity bond agree ment comes as regularly as the seasons.” ❖ " I have a real joy in the thought that I can have a share in the truly wonder ful work the Bible Society is doing for the whole world. I consider this is the best investment I have ever made.” "T o my mind your Annu ity Bonds have many at tractive features but I am especially pleased that my gift will aid in a great mis sionary work, and that when I am gone there will be no cost of administra tion, no inheritance tax, no wrangling of heirs.”

"The attractive yield pleases us for we are people o f limited means.” * "Your Annuity Bonds seem to me eating the cake and having it too; high present income, no tax on it as I am not in the income tax class now, and the assurance that when I go, the money is already in the hands of the Society that I have known and loved so long, for the best work in the world.”
