Close Reading Prepare for Close Reading Before children read, choose one or more short passages of complex text from the Anchor Text to use for applying close reading strategies. Choose text that • has rich language—so you can analyze the author’s word choice. • helps children build knowledge—especially knowledge that relates to the Essential Questions highlighted below. • reveals the author’s purpose and the mode of writing the author chose to use (expository, narrative, persuasive). First Read Make sure children have their copy of the Anchor Text. Ask children to read independently the passage(s) Text Features to Notice 3 Highlighted Words Help children locate examples of you’ve selected. Have children notice the words, phrases, or sentences that are confusing or difficult. Acknowledge each complexity by making a list, without clarifying or answering the questions. Close Read Point out that a second, or closer, reading is done to clarify questions and deepen understanding. Have children engage in a close read. Then encourage children to follow along as you read the text aloud. Check to see if children have a better understanding of the content. Be sure that earlier confusions are cleared up. Note that sometimes an author asks a question and then answers it. Point out that this is a good way to provide information. 3 Photos and Captions boldfaced words or words in color and explain that authors highlight words to focus attention on words that are important to know. 3 Questions and Answers

Reading Across Texts Use these questions to broaden children’s thinking about this topic. Encourage children to cite text evidence to support their discussion.
