Predictive & Proactive Resource Management through Automapp
Geo-MMS LiDAR HDL-32E LiDAR
Vegetation management for critical assets – like transmission and distribution lines – is of upmost importance for efficient utility operations. Electrical companies must not only identify vegetation to be managed, but also consider the potential dangers that can affect these assets. Automapp SPA, founded in Santiago, Chile in 2015 provide customized solutions to electricity generation and distribution companies. Auotmapp leverages Geodetics technology to provide value in the management of these critical assets, through the automation of inspection and evaluation of medium and high-voltage power lines, by combining robotic technology, LiDAR scanning, digital platforms and cloud computing.

The Challenge
Vegetation management around electric utilities, roadways, and other infrastructure has always been a critical component of operations and maintenance initiatives. This has typically involved clearing obvious hazards, but as threats from extreme weather events grow, so too does the concern for overall safety and the need for a more thorough and concerted vegetation management effort. Identification of encroaching vegetation is a critical step for targeted pruning. Unmanaged encroachment within powerline corridors will inevitably lead to damage of these critical assets, which extend for thousand of kilometers across nations and across diverse landscapes. Exceptionally strong winds will result in the most damage – exposing pre-existing or undetected weaknesses and creating damage that disrupts the entire network. Inspection methods have traditionally relied on qualified crews manually inspecting in hazardous environments, or manned aircraft scanning extensive corridor routes – both carry their disadvantages. Helicopters and other manned aircraft are useful for gathering large volumes of data, albeit at lower fidelity and data density levels. “Using best-in-class Geodetics LiDAR mapping solutions in our drone fleet, we have helped the biggest utility companies in Chile address vegetation encroachment and other utility safety concerns for more than five years. We maintain the highest standards in data capture and drone operations to identify and target vegetation that is encroaching on power lines, coupling the data with Automapp proprietary software – our robust web platform for critical asset management. This helps to redefine the effectiveness and efficiency of maintenance and operations for utility organizations.”

UAV-LiDAR provides an affordable, efficient, and easy-to-use method for collection of highly precise 3D data for vital mapping and management operations across a multitude of industries – including mining, forestry, land surveying and construction/infrastructure. Mapping smaller areas with high accuracy to supplement the work carried out by helicopters is a comprehensive approach to creating digital inventories of powerline networks and associated assets. Backed by Geodetics, Automapp are ushering in a new era of predictive maintenance, where data is not disposable, but contributes to a robust digital inventory – reducing the number of LiDAR missions – and therefore cost – to clients. By supplementing LiDAR point clouds capturing vegetation and the topography beneath with factors including vegetation growth and health status derived from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), teams can start to extend the life expectancy of captured data while identifying risks before they happen, mitigating risk and supporting maintenance crews to better organize their operations. This next generation of critical asset management tools brings together context, visual fidelity, and highly targeted risk assessment for insights into each organization’s unique needs and focus areas.

Digital Twins – Powered by LiDAR
Moving forward, organizations need access to reliable solutions that combine data, modeling, and mapping to give a clear picture of potential risks. Automapp brings together a real time 3D engine, live and future weather data, taxonomy, and LiDAR/photogrammetry/multispectral datasets coupled with satellite imagery. This has evolved into the company’s Digital Twin platform – a 3D digital replica of the real world connected to live data that allows organizations to move from a reactive stance to a predictive way of identifying problems. Using weather forecasts, this allows response crews to filter down high-risk vegetation records to only the elements that are likely to become an immediate danger to power lines due to high winds or other immanent weather conditions. This enables companies to better organize – freeing resources and using them only where immediately necessary while preparing for future needs. This unique and innovative platform can also study the impact of extreme weather events on the resiliency of the infrastruc- ture network to provide valuable insights to decision makers to future-proof the electrical systems serving their popula- tions. The platform has expanded beyond powerline risk detection, also simulating flood conditions – either due to structural failures of dams/weirs, increased severity of climatic conditions and other factors.
“By connecting online information on the weather forecast, we can detect how different weather conditions can affect the movement of trees near power lines and thus identify current and future risks. Additionally, it is possible to simulate an estimated growth rate in the trees, in order to better understand the problems that can occur due to incomplete pruning in relation to the electrical wiring.”
