Vegetation management for critical assets – like transmission and distribution lines – is of upmost importance for efficient utility operations. Electrical companies must not only identify vegetation to be managed, but also consider the potential dangers that can affect these assets. Automapp SPA, founded in Santiago, Chile in 2015 provide customized solutions to electricity generation and distribution companies. Auotmapp leverages Geodetics technology to provide value in the management of these critical assets, through the automation of inspection and evaluation of medium and high-voltage power lines, by combining robotic technology, LiDAR scanning, digital platforms and cloud computing.

The Challenge

Vegetation management around electric utilities, roadways, and other infrastructure has always been a critical component of operations and maintenance initiatives. This has typically involved clearing obvious hazards, but as threats from extreme weather events grow, so too does the concern for overall safety and the need for a more thorough and concerted vegetation management effort. Identification of encroaching vegetation is a critical step for targeted pruning. Unmanaged encroachment within powerline corridors will inevitably lead to damage of these critical assets, which extend for thousand of kilometers across nations and across diverse landscapes. Exceptionally strong winds will result in the most damage – exposing pre-existing or undetected weaknesses and creating damage that disrupts the entire network. Inspection methods have traditionally relied on qualified crews manually inspecting in hazardous environments, or manned aircraft scanning extensive corridor routes – both carry their disadvantages. Helicopters and other manned aircraft are useful for gathering large volumes of data, albeit at lower fidelity and data density levels. “Using best-in-class Geodetics LiDAR mapping solutions in our drone fleet, we have helped the biggest utility companies in Chile address vegetation encroachment and other utility safety concerns for more than five years. We maintain the highest standards in data capture and drone operations to identify and target vegetation that is encroaching on power lines, coupling the data with Automapp proprietary software – our robust web platform for critical asset management. This helps to redefine the effectiveness and efficiency of maintenance and operations for utility organizations.”
