Yes, the fish are dead, but they’re kept in cold buckets of water until they’re tossed and fed to birds afterward. Only $15 gets you a souvenir T-shirt and a chance to toss the mullet. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Community Drug and Alcohol Council and the local Boys and Girls Clubs in both states. April 27–29: Interstate Mullet Toss Many places have their claim to fame, and Perdido Key is no exception. It’s home to the famous/infamous Mullet Toss at the historic Flora-Bama lounge. The lounge hosts year-round events and boasts 365 days of live music. Each spring, they put on the Interstate Mullet Toss. It’s the reason thousands of spectators and participants flock to the area every year. HOW DID THIS LEGENDARY LOUNGE COME TO BE? In 1962, Florida gave Alabama 2 miles of beachfront property in exchange for being able to build the Perdido Pass Bridge, essentially creating a new Florida- Alabama state line. Playing off the novelty of having a state line right on the beach, the Tampary family had the great idea to open a bar and storefront there in 1964. The Flora-Bama was born. Being the only attraction of its kind when it opened, the lounge flourished. WHAT’S SO ENTERTAINING ABOUT A MULLET TOSS? It’s wacky fun, and you have to try it at least once. Participants are given a mullet — a Floridian fish, not the wig of an outdated hairstyle. From a marked
