BUDGET INFORMATION
What Does that Mean for PUHSD? PUHSD Administrators, Site Administrators and Staff have begun the work of looking into how and where budget reductions will need to be made across our District in response to our decrease of revenue. Through this newsletter, our website and other means of communication, we will continue to update our communities on our fiscal status. Per our “PUHSD Way”, we will navigate these times together and work collaboratively with all of our educational partners.
Declining Enrollment
Schools in California are experiencing a significant decline in enrollment, with a projected 7% drop by 2027-28, compared to 1.5% over the last ten years. This trend is expected to persist over the next decade. “Districts with declining enrollment face increased fiscal pressures because state funding is tied to the number of students they serve. While districts can respond by “downsizing,” this does not necessarily lead to budget savings because certain costs are fixed and certain “economies of scale” in services and staffing are lost.” (California Association of School Business Officials - CASBO) Utility costs, inflation and salary step in column are a few examples of these costs. PUHSD will be impacted by this as we began experiencing a decline in our schools’ enrollment in 2021-2022. Because of the “one-time” Federal and State funding, our budget remained stable during recent years.
The following is a graph showing PUHSD revenue & expenditures for this school year.
