and makes people feel comfortable. On top of that, he’s a team player.” While Ty may be modest about his livestock knowledge, he has a wealth of experience for someone his age. He comes from a long line of horse breeders and raises sheep that have gone on to compete in national competitions and fairs. “Those animals are a 24-hour job,” Ty explains, adding with a chuckle, “All any of us on this team know how to do is work!” Monique provides the spark of inspiration. She was out of the office the day we sat down to speak with the Burley team, but that didn’t stop her two coworkers from heaping praise upon her. “Monique brings a lot of ideas to the table,” Linda says. “She finds new ways to move feed and grab people’s attention.” Ty agrees, adding, “She’s almost like our marketing person. She’s got a lot of valuable experience in retail that lets us set up the store so customers can find what they’re looking for.” The Simplot Western Stockmen’s team in Burley embodies what this company is all about: knowledgeable people with industry experience putting their talents and passions to use to deliver meaningful service to pet owners and farmers alike. Whether it’s recommending the best feed for Aberdeen cattle or figuring out the dietary constraints of the local bobcat, Linda, Ty, and Monique are up to the challenge.
a variety of backgrounds, they share a love of customer service and animal care. Between horse and cattle ranching, award-winning sheep breeding, and rodeo appearances, each member of the Burley team works with livestock on and off the clock. Together, they form a tight-knit team. “We’re more family than people who work together,” says Linda. As the most senior member of the team, Linda has worked in the industry for the past 30 years, bringing a wealth of wisdom to the table. Ty praises her on her deep knowledge of Simplot’s products and her ability to draw on specific examples when helping clients. “Linda can give you a ‘for instance’ for just about any situation,” says Ty. When she’s not leveraging her decades of experience to help her customers, Linda is busy raising over 100 head of cattle, as well as horses. Despite the demands of cattle ranching and her day job, Linda still finds time to volunteer her time in the community, teaching 4-H courses in horsemanship. And of course, there’s nothing she enjoys more than spending quality time with her granddaughters. Ty is in many ways the face of the Burley store. This young man has been on our team for over three years now and has made an impression on his coworkers as someone who is humble and personable. “He’s always willing to learn,” Linda says with a smile. “He’s got a great personality
It may be a small feed store just outside the main thoroughfare, but the Simplot Western Stockmen’s Burley location is anything but dull. While they do a lot of business with chicken farmers in the region, the shop has also helped exotic creatures great and small, from hedgehogs to Komodo dragons. In fact, one of the shop’s regulars takes care of rescued bobcats. “It’s a little nerve-wracking, working with a wild animal like that,” admits sales associate Ty Loveland with a laugh. “But they are very well-trained. The customer went through a training course to adopt them. He even had one that would ride on the back of his motorcycle.” With a little bravery and a lifetime of industry experience between them, Ty and the rest of the Burley store team have been able to meet the unique needs of each of their customers. Ty is joined in the store by his two fellow sales associates, Linda Zollinger and Monique Hurst. While they come from

Meet Tim B My Name is Tim Bachman, and I am the beef sales representative for the Treasure Valley and southwest region of Idaho. I was born and raised in Nampa, Idaho. My wife and I currently live in Meridian, Idaho. We just had our first child, Jackson, on August 16. He’s 8 pounds 11 ounces, and both he and his mom are doing great! When I am not working, I enjoy hunting, fishing, golfing, and spending time with family. I started working for Simplot Western Stockmen’s in the spring of 2015. I was initially attracted to working for Simplot for its agricultural background and the fact that it is a family-run company. Both sides of my family are in the ranching business. I knew I wanted to become involved in the cattle business, and Simplot Western Stockmen’s has allowed me to do so. I love learning how we can continue to support the producer and help them be more profitable within their operation. I have always loved sales and working with cattle; SWS has given me the opportunity to have the best of both worlds. I feel I set myself apart from the competition through customer service and product knowledge. I work toward establishing strong relationships with my producers. Understanding the producers’ obstacles allows me to provide the best product available for their needs. I strive to stay up-to-date on the latest vaccine or product that my customers will benefit from. It is difficult to effectively sell to a customer if I cannot show how a particular product will address
Doc Talks: Weaning Fall Calves
Weaning beef calves in the fall is one of the most stressful times in a calf’s life. We need to do all we can to minimize the stress and keep the calves healthy. Calves that are on the rangeland pastures are particularly subject to getting sick. They may be trailed several miles in hot, dusty conditions before they are sorted and loaded on a truck to be hauled to their new home. They should be unloaded in a secure area with good grass, hay, and water readily available and be allowed to rest before they are processed. Diet changes can begin as soon as calves are eating and have stopped walking the pen. Feed changes should be gradual. These calves should receive vaccines that do not stress their immune systems. The intranasal vaccines are good at this time but do not give long-term immunity. Many of these calves are deficient in trace minerals due to lack of supplementation or antagonisms from other minerals in the soil in rangeland. They should be placed on a good mineral. It may take 45 days to get levels to normal range. Do not make sudden ration changes, and keep plenty of roughage in their diet. Calves on irrigated pastures can be weaned with minimal stress using either fence-line weaning or by applying quiet weaning nose tags and leaving them with their mothers. If the quiet weaning strategy is used, the bulls should be removed from the herd as the older heifer calves are approaching sexual maturity. Diet and nutrition should be similar to the rangeland calves. Vaccination protocols can include injectable viral vaccines, as these calves are not under as much stress as the rangeland calves. All calves should be observed daily for signs of disease and treated appropriately. If you have a weaning program that has worked well for you in the past, you may not want to change your protocol as each ranch is different, and what works for one may not work well for another.

WILD MUSHROOM BEEF STEW

Ingredients
• 1/4 cup dry red wine • 2 teaspoons minced garlic • 1 pound baby red potatoes, quartered • 8 ounces assorted mushrooms, such as shiitake, cremini, and oyster, cut into quarters • 1 cup baby carrots Garnish: • Chopped fresh parsley leaves
Directions • 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 3/4 cup reduced-sodium beef broth • 1/4 cup tomato paste
1. Combine beef stew meat, flour, salt, thyme, and pepper in large bowl; toss to coat. Place beef mixture in a 4 1/2-quart to 5 1/2-quart slow cooker. 2. Combine broth, tomato paste, wine, and garlic in small bowl; mix well. Add broth mixture to beef. Add potatoes, mushrooms, and carrots; mix well. 3. Cover and cook on high 5–6 hours, or on low 8–9 hours, or until beef and vegetables are tender. (No stirring is necessary during cooking.) Stir well before serving. Garnish with parsley, if desired.

Every year, we give our customers a chance to star in our company calendar. Seeing the smiling faces and happy animals of the folks we serve is a great daily reminder of why we love what we do. In the past, we’ve restricted this contest solely to those who have won grand champion or reserve champion at county fairs using our feed to grow their animal. But in our eyes, all of our customers are champions in their own right. That’s why we’re opening up the contest this year to let anyone in our community earn a place in the Simplot Western Stockmen’s calender of fame!
