Sandusky Packaging knows that customers are not just wooed by heavy metal on the floor, and so the company has also amped up its design, graphics and prepress ca- pabilities over the years. Johnson recalls his early tenure at SPC, running across town to pick up printing plates. “I was like, wow, we’re relying on somebody else. So in the 1990s we started making them here ourselves.” To John- son, it was about controlling the process and the reliability of the supply chain: “It’s why we got the Marquip sheeter, to control our own destiny.” SPC’s in-house design and graphics team – two structural designers and three graph- ic artists – relies on ESKO and ArtiosCAD structural design software to provide innovative solutions to customers’ packaging problems. “Everything here is state-of-the-art,” said Johnson, “So customers can feel comfortable with what’s going on.”

Johnson and his team are quick to recognize the ben- efit of increased efficiency and productivity when talking about the company’s investment in equipment, processes and technology: “The older equipment wasn’t good for la- bor, and now labor is everything,” he said, “We probably had 40 employees back then, and we just kept growing and growing and we still have around 45 employees. So that shows we’ve kept up with technology.” Betsy Santoro, Vice President of Finance, agreed: “We’re always looking to upgrade and stay modern with the greatest trends in technology.” Santoro, who joined Sandusky Packaging 29 years ago, noted that the company uses Epicor for its op- erating software, favoring it for its “industry-specific ERP solutions tailored to our industry.” Has AI found a role to play at Sandusky Packaging? Yes, to a point. Jamie Smith, Quality Manager and a 35- year SPC veteran, says he uses it to help write procedural manuals for the company’s ISO, G7 and GMI requirements. Santoro has used AI to simplify financial documents or contracts. “If we receive a contract and I don’t quite un- derstand it, I’ll put it in AI to explain it in simpler terms,” she said.
