don’t even know we’re here, and if we can reach out and reach those three or four new accounts, that’s where I see an immediate use.” ‘Our Greatest Assets Are Our Employees’ The Sandusky Packaging leadership recognizes, above all, that equipment, processes and technology do not alone determine success. “Our greatest assets are our employees,” Betsy Santoro said. “We’re like a family here.” Randy Johnson is keenly aware of his role as ‘cheer- leader in chief” for the SPC team and his responsibility to them. Pointing to his colleagues around the table, John- son said, “If you weren’t family, you didn’t get anywhere here,” referring to the company’s early days. “Now they are vice presidents. Nobody had those titles unless you were a [founding] family member.” Greg Norman said, “Randy appreciates people, he recognizes their talent and he rewards them. We need to do that,” he continued, “to keep people happy.” Johnson is also nurturing the next generation of SPC leadership, providing opportunities to younger members of the company’s staff. Morgan Shelton, a three-month veteran fresh out of Bowling Green (Ohio) State University, pulls double-duty as a graphic designer and social media and Marketing Specialist. Mitchel Tucker, Greg Norman’s understudy in estimat- ing, is another promising leader in the company. Johnson has a good eye for talent, and from his position as a Board Member for the Erie-Huron-Ottawa Vocational Education (EHOVE) campus in nearby Milan, Ohio, he sees many bright stars. “I feel good about the new people coming in,” he said, ticking off a number of positions where training is currently taking place. “We have Morgan there in graphics and Brian, a younger man in structural design and CAD. We’re training a new man on the sheeter right now, and we’re training Jamie’s son and another young man on the KBA, and another on the die-cutter. We have two in gluing training; we have shipping training, and a new customer service rep starting Monday. So we’re planning ahead,” he said. “We have customers calling every day.” Sandusky Packaging Corp. is indeed in a “very good spot,” as Johnson said at the outset of this article. Its 60 years in business have proven the power of independent thinking, strategic investment decisions and singular focus on customer service. What’s more, SPC has a demonstrat- ed track record of commitment to recognizing and caring for its loyal and long-tenured team members. The last word goes to Patrick Shepherd of the Greater Sandusky Partnership, the area’s Chamber of Commerce. On the occasion of SPC’s 60th Anniversary celebration last year, Shepherd told the Sandusky Register, “Sandusky Packaging’s 60 years in business is an incredible achieve- ment and a point of pride for our region. They have contin- ued to grow, innovate and provide good jobs right here at home, and their success reflects the strength of our local business community and the vital role manufacturing plays in our regional economy.”
