Understanding operation of halide perovskite photovoltaics on different length scales Sam Stranks University of Cambridge, UK Halide perovskite solar cells are generating enormous excitement owing to their use in high-performance optoelectronic devices including solar cells and LEDs. However, there remains performance losses and operational instability pathways in devices that limit their true potential. I will discuss the evolution of the community’s understanding of carrier recombination in halide perovskite semiconductors. I will outline a series of multimodal microscopy methodologies that are giving us insight into these properties on the nanoscale in state-of-the-art halide perovskite thin films devices 1,2,3. Correlations between local structural, chemical and carrier recombination measurements reveal the detrimental role of nanoscale phase impurities that act as carrier traps and sites that seed degradation. I will discuss a key interplay between the presence of carrier traps and other nanoscale heterogeneities, the latter which can in fact be beneficial for performance. The talk will summarise this global understanding of carrier recombination and degradation mechanisms on the nanoscale, and outline strategies to further improve performance and stability.
