Syntheses of complex halide perovskites: mosaic perovskites and perovskite heterostructures Hemamala Karunadasa 1 , Michael Aubrey 1 , Jiayi Li 1 , Bridget Connor 1 , Abraham Saldivar Valdes 1 , Marina Filip 2 , Jeffrey Neaton 3 1 Department of Chemistry, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94304, United States 2 Department of Physics, University of Oxford, Oxford OX1 3PU, United Kingdom 3 Department of Physics, University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA 94720, United States Halide perovskites offer a flexible platform for tuning optoelectronic properties through changes in composition, connectivity, and dimensionality. I will present our recent studies on further increasing the accessible electronic structures of this versatile family of materials. i) I will present the new “mosaic perovskites” featuring 3 different octahedrally coordinated metals and different possible local packing arrangements (1, 2) . ii) I will also describe methods we recently developed for the solution-state self-assembly of layered heterostructures, featuring an interleaving of 2D perovskite sheets with sheets of a different layered structure (3) . To our knowledge, these compounds are the first layered perovskite heterostructures to form as single-crystals using organic templates. I will discuss how this interleaving of two different inorganic structures can markedly transform the band structure and optical properties. Given the technological promise of halide perovskites, our intuitive synthetic routes set the foundation for the directed synthesis of complex semiconductors in water.
