What are my opportunities for project work or coursework? The A-level course consists of 2 coursework components:
Component 1: Personal Investigation 60% of qualification: 96 marks
Pupils will select their own starting point or stimulus for this component with the advice from their teacher. This in an in depth, independent investigation into a theme of their choice, creating a sketchbook or portfolio evidencing their design journey starting point to final realisation. This should include: contextual research, practical experimentation, reviewing and refining, designing and recording ideas, critical understanding of sources as well as the final outcome. This unit is accompanied by a written element of 1000-3000 words that reflects on the development of ideas, techniques and influences. This is a NEA (non-examined assessment) that is internally marked, and externally moderated.
Component 2: Externally set assignment 40% of qualification: 96 marks
AQA set a series of starting points with written stimulus and suggested artists. Pupils are required to select 1 of these starting points to research, develop, refine and record ideas throughout the preparatory period which is from the release of the paper on 1st February to the practical 15 hour exam. During this time they should produce a sketchbook or portfolio that demonstrates the pupils design journey from the starting point to final realisation, this should include: contextual research, practical experimentation, reviewing and refining, designing and recording ideas, critical understanding of sources. Once the preparatory period is completed, pupils will complete the supervised time, 15 hours under exam conditions. During this time, the pupil should complete the final outcome for the component.
