Three causeswill benefit from“MegaRuns” that will be held during the Outaouais Riv- er Festival July 6 and 7. Sunday, July 7, the Mayors’ Challenge, a fun event where Prescott-Russell may- ors compete in a relay water-ski run, from Hawkesbury to Rockland, will raise money for Prostate Cancer Canada. Residents from each municipality are in- vited to form teams of approximately five people to water ski down the river to win the Mayor’s Cup. Last year, Clarence-Rock- land Mayor Marcel Guibord won the trophy. “I invite the Mayors and the residents, who, I hope, will respond in large numbers. Mayor Guibord will have to solidly defend his cup,” remarks Hawkesbury Mayor, county war- den and Mayors’ Challenge spokesperson, René Berthiaume. Sunday July 7, United Way Prescott-Rus- sell presents the Toy Run, where motor- cyclists go to the four corners of Prescott- Russell while collecting toys and money for UnitedWay Prescott-Russell. “It is with great pleasure that United Way Prescott-Russell invite you to not miss the 2013motorcycle ride in the beautiful region of Prescott-Russell. Province looks at cost for police GREGG CHAMBERLAIN GREGG.CHAMBERLAIN@EAP.ON.CA services. The committee has representa- tives from the Association of Municipali-
ties of Ontario, provincial police groups, and others.
L’ORIGNAL | The counties council has an answer at last to the question posed to the provincial government about polic- ing costs. The government has a com- mittee looking into the matter. In January this year the United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) voted to support a resolution from the Town- ship of Elizabethtown-Kitley demanding the province review the costs for OPP policing service contracts with munici- palities and also that the provincial gov- ernment consider covering a portion of those contracts itself. The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services sent back a letter explaining that it has received complaints from many municipalities about the cost of police services, both those that con- tract with the OPP and those who deal with other police agencies. The ministry has since created a con- sulting committee on the future of police
Kindergarten grows The Upper Canada District School Board is extending its full-day every-day kindergarten programming to all of its 64 elementary schools this September. The board now provides full-day every-day K in 29 elementary schools where students are under the supervision of a teacher and an early childhood educator. “Full-time learning in kindergarten brings a range of advantages to our students. There is greater continuity of instruction and chil- dren learn new skills faster because they will be in class full-time to practise them,” said board chair Greg Pietersma. Research suggests that full-day everyday programming in kindergarten offers several advantages. Full-time learning in junior and senior Kindergar- ten contributes to school readiness, leads to improved literacy achievement, and levels the playing field for all learners.
