CONDUCTING Students a re given thorough in struction in all vari eties of rhythm and the best way of beating time for each-both with and without th e baton. Each studen t appears before the class from time to time as a conducto r and under the guidance and cr iti cism of the in structor gai ns actual expe rien ce in conduct ing a cho ir and congregati on. 7. NORMAL TRAINING Students a re in structed in pedagogical principles as ap plied to mus ic, and given actual experience before the class in teach ing the facts of mu sic Theory, Notat ion and Harmony. Thi s subject requires two terms work. 8. VIOLIN AND ORCHESTRAL I NSTRUMENTS A\n expe ri enced violini st gives in struction in this important in strument, using the best modern methods. Expert inst ruction is a lso provided for those desiring instruction on the cornet, trombone and other band and orchest ral instruments. XXV. Practical Work As the whole a im of the Ins titute is to turn out wo rkers, not mere theorists , the inst ructi on g iven in the class room is at once trans lated in to practice, as a part of the tra ining. Students a re required to at tend and assi st in missions, st reet meetings, tent meetings, to visit people in their homes, to conduct ad ult Bible classes and Sunday school classes, and to engage in various other forms of aggressive Christian work, and a lways with their eyes open for opportunities for personal work. These assignments are made by the Superintendents, and every student is required to hand in each week a wri tten re port of their work. A weekly repo rt meeting is held at which the work of the preceding week is surveyed and difficu lties discussed. This is one of the most practical , he lpful, and inspirational hours of the week.
