COI\ D CTING Stud ents are given thorough instruction in all varieties . of rhythm and the bes t way of beating time for each-both with and without the baton. Each stud ent appears before the class from time to time as a conductor and under th e guidance and critici sm of the instructor ga in s actua l exper ience in conducting a choir and congregat ion. 8 . NORMAL TRAI I\ING Student s are instructed in pedagogical principles as ap pl ied to music, and given ac tu a l experi ence before th e class in teaching the fact s of mu sic Theo ry, Notation and Harmony. T hi s subj ect r equires two te rms work. 9. VIOLIN AND ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTS An experienced violini st gives in structi on in. this important instrument, using the best modern methods. Expert instruction is also provided for those des iring instruction on the cornet, trombone and other band and o rchestra l instruments. XXVI. Practical Work As the whole aim of th e lnstitute is to turn out workers. not mere theori sts, the in structi on given in the class room is at once translated into practice. as a part of the training. Students are required to attend ancl assist in mi ss ions, ~.treet meetings, tent meetings, to visit people in their homes, to conduct adult Bible classes ancl Sunday school classes, and to engage in va rious oth er fo rms of agg ressiYe Chri stian work, and a lways with their eyes open fo r oppo rtuniti es for personal work. These assignments are made by th e Superintendents, anc! every student is required to han :I in each week a written re port of their work. A weekly report mee ting is held at whi ch the work of the preceding week is surveyed and difficulti es discus sed . T hi, 1s one of the most practical , helpful , and inspirati onal hour~ ai the week.
